AEW WrestleDream 2024 Review: The End of an Era

Yes, for once, I am gracing you all with an AEW pay-per-view review! Let’s be honest: It’s mainly because two of my championships were on the line during this show, so I had to ensure that ROH was well-represented! Oh yeah, there were a bunch of other great matches, too. Let’s review!

ROH World Television Championship: Atlantis Jr. vs Brian Cage: TK is testing my patience with having this match start the show now, isn’t he? Like I said in our predictions Cage is 30-0 in ROH-sanctioned matches which is why he got this match, too bad no one seemed to mention that at all. This match was a tad slow, but commentary revealed that Atlantis Jr. was stretchered out of Arena Mexico last week. In an amazing turn of events an ROH Superstar is an ROH Champion, now let’s hope he stays on ROH.

Winner: “And New” Brian Cage

Harley Cameron vs Anna Jay: I am giving both of these women credit because they have come so far in both of their wrestling careers. I know people are going to make fun of the ending because Cameron forgot to put her other shoulder down, but they both had a great showing. Jay has been on another level since coming back from Japan and I can not wait to see what she has in store for the rest of the year and going into 2025.

Winner: Anna Jay

MxM Collection (Mason Madden and Mansoor) with Rico vs The Acclaimed (Max Caster and Anthony Bowens) with Billy Gunn: I do not believe anyone expected to see Rico on this show, but here we are. This match was a bit too long and at points dragged, but the main thing everyone wanted to see was the interaction between Gunn and Rico which fans were excited to see. The Acclaimed get the win as MxM and Rico go home without their tips touching.

Winners: The Acclaimed

The OutRunners (Truth Magnum and Turbo Floyd), Orange Cassidy, and Kyle O’Riley vs The Premier Athletes (Tony Nese and Ari Davari) and Jon Silver and Alex Reynolds: To be honest, you could have probably had this match on Honor Club with all of the ROH Talent you had in this one. The Outrunners are extremely over as fans were chanting for them throughout the match, and they have the third best-selling merchandise in the entire company right now. After Sterling put Davari’s foot on the rope preventing Cassidy from getting the win, Orange was able to get revenge on Sterling which was nice to see. Outrunners get the win, in what so far is the biggest pop of zero hour.

Winners: The OutRunners (Truth Magnum and Turbo Floyd), Orange Cassidy, and Kyle O’Riley

Main Show:

Jay White vs Adam Page: I did not think they would pull the trigger on White winning this one, but I am glad they did. This was the perfect way to start the show with the match that was the hardest to call on the entire card. White hitting the knee blade on the outside on the ramp was the game changer as Page was not strong enough to hit the buckshot lariat. White and Juice Robinson celebrate the win as White begins to hunt for gold!

Winner: Jay White

AEW Women’s World Championship: Mariah May vs Willow Nightingale: This match was better than their first match earlier this year for the Owen Hart Cup. Nightingale has been on another level this year constantly putting on amazing matches every single time she has been on TV. This has also been the match we have been waiting for May to have since winning the title as she also showed out in this match as well. I was shocked that Mina did not come out here, so guess we will wait and see what happens with that.

Winner: “And Still” Mariah May

TNT Championship: Jack Perry vs Katsuyori Shibata: Unfortunately, this match did not matter because of everything that happened after the match was over. Before we get to all of that this was fine, the ending was sudden as Shibata put Perry in the sleeper and everyone’s shoulders were down, and Perry was able to escape with the win. Perry then attacked Shibata from behind as Daniel Garcia came out to confront Perry. As Perry exits the ring MJF appears and attacks Garcia with the Dynamite Diamond Ring. As MJF is about to hit Garcia with the ring a returning Adam Cole appears! Cole chases MJF out of the ring as he says he is cleared and MJF is dead.

Winner: “And Still Jack Perry

AEW International Championship: Will Ospreay vs Ricochet vs Konsouke Takeshita: This was one of the most highly anticipated matches on the show, and I was nervous about what would happen before the crowd would be dead, but I was wrong. All three of these men were constantly on their feet, flying in the air, reversing each other’s moves, and everything you can think happened in this match probably ended up happening. After Takeshita put Richocet through a table it came down to Ospreay and Takeshita. Callis pulled the ref out and was about to hit Ospreay with the screwdriver. Ospreay reversed and Kyle Fletcher took the screwdriver and hit Ospreay with it. Takeshita took advantage and got the win. After the match was over Fletcher hit the Tiger Driver 91 on his former best friend as the Don Callis Family celebrated the new champion.

Winner: “And New” Konsouke Takeshita

Swerve Injury Update: Swerve announced that he is medically cleared and he wanted the opportunity to address his hometown. MVP interrupts and says that he wants to talk about his future and that Swerve has not answered any of his messages. MVP says that he has believed in Swerve since day one but his career needs some readjustment. He says his management career speaks for itself and he has turned former champions back into champions. Swerve puts over Benjamin and MVP saying if it was not for them, he would not be able to stand in that ring. Swerve says that MVP is right and since being aligned with Nana he has lost it all, but if it was not for Nana he would not have had all those great things in the first place. He says MVP and him have so much history and they would be able to make a lot more if they were aligned. He says that he and Nana are family and he is not interested in being with the Hurt Syndicate. Benjamin says that he thinks Swerve misunderstood and you are either with them or against them. They got into it before the referees broke them up.

Two out of Three Falls: Hologram vs The Beast Mortos: At this point in the show, the crowd was getting tired and you can tell that throughout this matchup. These two had some cool moves throughout the match, but they did not need to have this on the pay-per-view especially since there were no leading developments on a storyline for either man.

Winner: Hologram

Darby Allin vs Brody King: This was another match that did not need to happen on the pay-per-view. I understand Allin is from Washington and you wanted him to get a hometown reception, but this show was already running long and you can tell the crowd was ready to see the main event. Allin went crazy hitting a lot of crazy moves and he was able to get the win. King and Allin shook hands after the match to show respect for one another.

Winner: Darby Allin

AEW Tag Team Championship: The Young Bucks (Matthew and Nicholas Jackson) vs Private Party (Quen and Zay): This was Private Party’s best match in AEW, and you can tell that the crowd wanted them to win. If you are going to watch any of the matches back, this is one you should. The video package they played before the match of Amazing Red hyping up Private Party was a deserving moment. I hope they run this one back at FG and they get the gold.

Winners: “And Still” The Young Bucks (Matthew and Nicholas Jackson)

ROH World Championship: Mark Briscoe vs Chris Jericho: Thank Christ, also this was rushed.

Winner: “And Still” Mark Briscoe

AEW World Championship: Bryan Danielson vs Jon Moxley: TK got the full payment out of playing “The Final Countdown” this time, meaning they played the entire four-minute song for the intro as Moxley and Danielson fought on the outside. This match was everything you expected it to be. Moxley wins with the sleeper as the rest of the BCC comes out to celebrate with him. Darby Allin tries to make the save, but they duct tape him to the ropes. Yuta turns on Danielson and places a plastic bag on his head and chokes him out. The BCC keeps beating him down while some of the roster tries to help, but they fail. It was not until the likes of Adam Cole and Daniel Garcia came out that they left the building and the EMTS attended to Danielson, and that closed our show.

Winner: “And New” Jon Moxley

Overall: Don’t get me wrong these matches delivered in every sense of the word (except for the ROH World Championship match), but this show dragged at points. The last two matches were rushed to hit the hard out at midnight and it showed. Other than that this was the standard AEW pay-per-view. Returns, good matches, people complaining on Twitter, and TK continuing to prove everyone wrong and produce a great show!
