Pop Break Live: Orville Peck ‘Stampede Tour’ with Nikki Lane and Vincent Neil Emerson at The Met in Philadelphia, PA on Friday October 18, 2024
Masked country singer-songwriter Orville Peck stopped in at The Met in Philadelphia on Friday October 18th. He is touring in support of this third studio album Stampede, which was just released in August. The album includes new originals and multiple duets from a star-studded list that include Willie Nelson, Elton John, Margo Price, Noah Cyrus and Diplo.
Singer-songwriter Nikki Lane was one of the opening acts and really put on an impressive set. Lane was backed by a stellar band and treated the audience to a great mix of songs from her catalog of work which included multiple songs from her critically acclaimed Denim & Diamonds album, released in 2022.
Lane’s sound runs the gamut from classic Country, Honky Tonk, modern Americana but with a ’70s twist. She is a great story teller and there is no doubt that a lot of the lyrics she sang resonated with the crowd. Her banter with the crowd was funny at times. Some of the highlights were “Faded” and “Can’t get enough of your Love” but it was the rockin’ “Jackpot” and “Denim and Diamonds” that got the crowd going. It set the tone for what turned out to be a really special night of music at the Met.
Orville Peck put on one hell of a show!
He opened with the haunting song “Big Sky.” It was obvious early on that his chemistry with this Philly crowd was off the charts! A lot of his fans were dressed in their best country inspired outfits or hats. This guy is dripping with charisma. He was all over the stage during the set and it was a masterclass in showmanship 101! It was fun watching his chemistry with his talented band as well. He told the audience early on that there were three rules to his shows. He said to sing along to the songs, even if you didn’t know them and to dance. The last rule was if you felt like crying then just cry. He mentioned that he cancelled his last tour as he was struggling with mental and physical issues. He said it was the best decision he ever made as it saved his life. There were loud cheers from his fans when he said he is doing great now. It was a nice moment.
Peck’s set was a mix of uptempo sing-along songs and just as many tear jerkers. He alternated between guitars and the piano during the set. Some of the highlights were “Hexie Mountains,” “Drive Me Crazy,” “C’mon Baby, Cry,” “How Far will We take it” and “Cowboys are Frequently,” “Secretly fond of Each Other.” He played to a very enthusiastic crowd and it couldn’t have gone any better.
