Preview Special: Space Ghost #11 (Dynamite Comics)

The big event is here! Space Ghost #11, the issue we’ve all been waiting, for has finally arrived. I’m not one to brag, but I’ve called this way back when I previewed the third issue. Thanks to the criminal Doctor Ibal,  the Council of Doom has arrived!

Don’t worry, this is not a total spoiler, considering it is in the Previews advertisement, and the title of this week’s release. It’s pretty straightforward, but some very familiar villains have been brought together with one sole purpose in mind. The demise of Space Ghost.

As enemies assemble, our galactic hero continues the personal mission of being the savior the galaxy needs, all the while our two young companions question their continued usefulness and contemplate what the future holds. it’s fairly clear that the events from last issue, meeting a future version of Jace, certainly has the kids rattled and wondering where do they go from here? it seems the tension between Space Ghost and his teenage companions has risen to a boiling point, erupting in tragic fashion.

One tragedy leads to the next as members of the Council of Doom lead an assault  on the ghost planet.

I won’t go into any further detail, without risk of spoilers. The build to the Council of Doom has been clever with bread crumbs laced throughout the past ten issues. Longtime fans of Space Ghost would likely anticipate their inevitable appearance. Praise goes to writer David Pepose, and his team of creative minds who have put together a story which hits all the emotional notes, leading to a heartbreaking cliffhanger. I’ve been looking forward to seeing the Council of Doom finally arrive. I felt it while reading the previous issue.  Considering the serious tone of the series, with death and destruction as a recurring theme, this is certainly not the Hanna-Barbera cartoon version of campy villains with snarky plans and one-liners. This is a cabal of deathly serious villains, well coordinated, and well organized, which gives me the vibe that this story arc is going to continue for quite some time.

As always, major kudos to Pepose, along with Jonathan Lau, Andrew Dalhouse, and Taylor Esposito who once again have presented a symphony of colorful bedlam, a ballet of havoc being wrought upon the galaxy. I was shocked to receive the advanced review just a week after the release of the previous issue. I consider it  my prize for correctly anticipating what might be the culmination of a fantastic story.

Space Ghost #11 is available at your local comic shop on March 19.
