Review: Karol G, ‘Tropicoqueta’

Written by Isabella Baute Arboleda

Karol G is back with her new album, Tropicoqueta, which was released on June 20 on all platforms. With this album, the multi-time Grammy winner incorporates vallenato, cumbia, dembow, ranchera, samba, mambo, merengue, bachata, and Brazilian Funk — proving to the world that she can sing more than just reggaeton.

Tropicoqueta is a combination of two Spanish words “Tropical” and “Coqueta” (Flirty). The new album commemorates her Latin roots. She brings a vibrant, sensual, and Latin atmosphere to each song and each video — making it a complete and immersive experience. Karol G has drawn inspiration from classic Latin songs, incorporating samples into several of her tracks, including “Latina Foreva,” “Cuando Me Muera Te Olvido,” and “Tropicoqueta.” In an interview with Billboard in Spanish, Karol G stated, “This album is an homage to all the Latin music genres I grew up listening to.”

Each song is a different world featuring collaboration with artists like Marco Antonio Solís, Greeicy, Manu Chao, Eddy Lover, and Mariah Angeliq. Each guest brings with them different styles and themes. Sonically, she mixes traditional sounds from Colombia and other Latin Countries with modern pop throughout the album.

One of the best songs of the album is “Papasito.” The song is an upbeat techno merengue track featuring both English and Spanish lyrics. It has a classic Latin pop sound and tells the story of Karol G as a strong and confident woman who falls in love with her “papasito.” The music video is set in a vintage 1950s style, like a dramatic old telenovela. It includes popular actors such as Danny Ramirez, known for his roles in Marvel movies, playing the character “Papasito,” Martha Navarro portraying “Mama.”

“Verano Rosa” is a reggaeton track in which she sings with her boyfriend and famous singer Feid, a collaboration that many of their fans have been waiting for. This song is about a past summer romance. Although the couple is no longer together, they still can’t forget each other. In this track, Feid and Karol G capture the vibe of their relationship beautifully.

Then there’s “La Reina Presenta.”This is not a song but an invitation that opens the album featuring Mexican singer Thalia, emphasizing a new era of Karol G. At first she was a “Bebesita” then a “Bichota” and now “Tropicoqueta” as the song states.

“Bandida entrada” is a mix of reggaeton and funk in which Karol G sings in both Portuguese and Spanish, has a modern and urban vibe, and is perfect for the dance floor.

The rest of the album features songs representing different countries in Latin America which Karol G has shown to be proud of.

In this album, we see amazing visuals, her album is full of bright colors, beaches, and tropical vibes. This album is a message, it celebrates being Latina, being proud of who you are, and remembering where you come from.

Even though there are different opinions there is something that is true, her album is already trending on TikTok and streaming platforms. Karol G hasn’t confirmed a tour yet, but many of her fans are expecting one where she’ll bring the Tropicoqueta vibes to the stage.

Tropicoqueta is more than an album, it is about Latin culture. With this new sound, Karol G is proving to the world that she is not afraid to try new things and stay true to herself. Karol G is not just about music but telling history.

Tropicoqueta by Karol G is now streaming on Spotify.
