After months of waiting, the big finale of “season one” is arriving to comic shops this Wednesday!
Hope is lost, it’s over… Finished! With B.L.I.P. captive, and the Council of Doom revealed to be under the thrall of Ultima, Space Ghost along with Jan and Jace seem helpless and powerless to stop it! The gang is all here with the full roster of heroes and villains!
Big is an understatement, the extra-length comic is jam-packed with bold and bright action by Jonathan Lau and Andrew Dalhouse. The threatening vibe of villains and the despair and heroism are articulated by letterer Taylor Esposito. Of course, the culmination of the first major story arc of Space Ghost is articulately written by David Pepose.
The descriptions used are not just praise, but accurately detail moments of despair and horror experienced by the heroes and one reading may truly feel these emotions panel-by-panel. What sticks out the most, not just a battle seemingly without end, but a clever way to tie together the underlying points from the series. How each villain was recruited by Robo Corp, their strengths (and weaknesses!) being pooled together but manipulated by Ultima. Individual battles were nothing more than information gathering.
A big one, the concept of family. Jace and Jan lost theirs. An encounter during the finale puts their definition of family into question. Space Ghost, a man who lost it all, thought the idea of a family would never be familiar again, finds himself to an awareness of family being his lifeline to humanity.
It’s a fun finale which should be read more than once. Read it as a story, read it as a big ol’ battle. Read it because it’s just awesome.
The end of the issue calls back to #10 with the appearance of Space Spectre. It is revealed who sent him and why, but it seems things did not go according to plan and season two of Space Ghost will prove that the battle truly never ends!
