Space Ghost Season 2 has begun!
David Pepose and his assembled crew of creators waste no time in kicking off the next major story arc for Space Ghost. With the Council of Doom defeated with members either in custody or in retreat, one might think Dax, Jan, Jace, and Blip take a breath to regroup and plan ahead. However, in the final pages of the Space Ghost Annual (spoiler alert if you haven’t read it – shame on you!), the kids opt to join the Space Academy to gain more education and knowledge about the larger galaxy. However, the surprise reveal of their maternal grandfather, Doctor Henry Contra throws a big wrench into the works.
The first issue of season two begins with two perspectives. One with Dr. Contra talking to Jace and Jan about his concept of family and the reason why he has not reached out. Of course this leaves both children and loyal readers with the same question: “Why now?”
When questioned about their “caretaker” in Dax, the children avoidantly explain how he often “travels” for his work, in which Dax is very dedicated to. While the kids regale their grandfather of tales of respect and dedication, Space Ghost is in the midst of battle against The Toymaker, a dastardly villain who manipulates toys, objects, devices, all into deathly weapons. Ghost, with Blip, narrates his own mantra of continuing to bring justice to a vulnerable galaxy. His mission, clearly not over.
But what of Dr. Contra? As the issues progresses on, it would appear the good doctor seems to have noble intentions, but a debate to the definition of family dominates the crux of the issue, and it makes for some unique perspectives. Jan and Jace offer their experience as their information, while Dr. Contra appears to rely solely on a blood relation. Is there more?
Longtime fans will know who Dr. Contra is from the original cartoon, but perhaps this modern iteration will be different?
As always, the creative minds of writer David Pepose, artists Jonathan Lau, and colorist Andrew Dalhouse bring the story to vibrant life. Taylor Esposito as always brings dialogue to life as letter, with Joseph Rybrandt as editor to the series. The crew of Space Ghost seem to have a plan to continue tugging at readers’ heartstrings. Season one was a strong start and is clear evidence season two may continue this trend of keeping fans is suspense ad driven for more.
