This interview series is a summer-long series spotlighting the bands performing at Asbury Jams every Thursday at The Wonder Bar in Asbury Park, New Jersey. Produced by ElmThree – Asbury Jams brings rising local, regional and national touring bands from the jam scene to the City that Bruce Built.

Michael Wilbur can be described in many ways but an apt description for him would be renaissance man.

Wilbur made his mark in the music world as part of Moon Hooch — a band that began their career busking in New York subways and then exploding onto the scene with their joyous amalgam of hip-hop, jazz and dance music.

Starting in 2024, Wilbur spread his solo wings to create a slew of singles with TAUK, Cyzon Griffin, Future Joy, and Expensive Feelings. Outside of his music career and aggressive touring schedule, he’s also still teaching music and has launched a new company to bring “golden age” saxophones to the masses.

Recently, we caught up with Michael Wilbur to discuss his solo run, collaborations, teaching, his new music venture and his new upcoming music.

We’ve seen you perform in Moon Hooch and Thundersmack — how does your solo music differ from these projects?

My solo project is a sonic blend of all my life’s musical influences: from hip hop to house, techno, free improvisation and performance art. It’s much more personal than my other projects because it’s just me up there with my production and horns. There’s no one to save me if I mess up. There’s a lot on the line and I like to play it that way.

You’ve dropped multiple singles and collaborations this year — can we expect an EP or full-length at some point in the near future?

I’m currently working on two different albums, Bass Sax Beats Vol. 4 and Feeling is the Secret. BSB Vol. 4 is an extension of my raw bass sax hip hop production. Feeling is the Secret will feature recent singles “Simmer Down” and “Turn it Up.” I’ve got a lot more cooking.

Speaking of collaborations, are there any more we can look forward to from you? Loved your song “Sucker Punch” with TAUK.

Thank you! I’m really looking forward to playing with them this month at Levitt Pavilion in Denver. I actually have another track with them coming out soon that I’m stoked about. They’re great!

Can you describe the live experience that you’ll be bringing to The Wonder Bar for Asbury Jams?

I’ll be bringing raw, fun, big, explosive saxophone energy. It is going to be a dance party. The focus is fun, catharsis and togetherness!

Can you talk about Wind & Reed — a company you co-run that “brings saxophones” from the golden age to the masses?

I’ve been collecting and selling saxophones a long time. I’ve always been fascinated by the historical aspect of saxophones and decided to make my hobby legitimate. Our goal is to bring cool, affordable vintage horns to up and coming players and professionals.

You offer music lessons on your website. Can you talk about the joy you get from teaching people how to play music?

I love teaching. Without the guidance of my teachers throughout the years I wouldn’t be where I am today. I believe having a good teacher and mentor is crucial for the healthy development of any skill. I love sharing the knowledge I’ve gained over the past 28 years in a world of music.

What are five things you’re excited about for your solo career (and other endeavors) in 2025?

I’m excited for my upcoming solo festival gigs. Summerdance, Equinox to name a few. And of course Asbury Jams! I’m also excited to get my new music out into the world. I plan on stepping up my live production by adding lights and visuals as well.
