Review: Space Ghost Season 2 Issue #2 (Dynamite Comics)

In the next exciting adventure of Space Ghost, our hero is caught in the clutches of a sinister mob boss! There is treasure! Intrigue! Adventure and… A possible love interest? Jan, Jace, and Blip must help Space Ghost confront new and dangerous challenges!

In the first few panels we get not one but two nods. One of which involves using his name from Space Ghost Coast-to-Coast as a cover identity while the second is a deep cut for a villainess who only appeared in the short-lived “Space Stars” series. The Eclipse Woman is introduced into the Dynamite Space Ghost universe. As she is introduced as a master of stealth, we later find her abilities are useful for pilfering as well. In fact, she is revealed to possess similar technology to Space Ghost.

We find Space Ghost tracking artifacts being stolen from the kid’s grandfather’s laboratory, and it is none other than the Eclipse Woman engaged in the thefts. However, we all learn in the true form of a thief, there is always the motivation and behind the motivation is a bigger prize.

The next introduction of an old character from both Space Ghost and the more humorous Coast-to-Coast series, is being slightly renamed and re-characterized to fit in with this more grim galactic atmosphere in the name of Boss Parko. Originally portrayed as a robotic scientist gone rogue, this time Parko is now a ruthless gang boss.

If this isn’t enough for Space Ghost and crew, a bigger threat is inadvertently released which forces old love interests to reunite again, even temporarily.

I dig the direction the story is taking. Season Two of Space Ghost maintains the action-packed adventure we’ve come to expect from the first season. Added comes a darker and more serious tone. The galaxy is not a forgiving place and this issue gives a lot of insight into this reality. Eclipse Woman is the Catwoman to Space Ghost’s Batman. She’s cunning, sexy, and has the wit of tongue to manipulate those when needed. I laughed at an offhanded comment she makes towards Jace who initially threatens her, but she replies about him rethinking his stance once he hits puberty. Brilliant.

Catch all the action and more as Space Ghost #2 of the second season hits local comic shops this week!
