The 77th Primetime Emmys Recap: The Shocks, The Snubs and The Studio

The 77th Primetime Emmy Awards proved just how tough the competition was for television this year! Many highs were experienced at the Creative Arts Emmys and the Primetime Emmys ceremony on Sunday. The star-studded night in the Peacock theater featured history-making moments – and as usual, there were some huge sweeps.

Historic Wins and Substantial Sweeps

Don’t poke the bear, but it seems like The Studio did as it nudged over The Bear and became the new record-holder for most awards won in the comedy category in an Emmys cycle.

Apple TV+ is on a roll, as The Studio totally swept the comedy awards. The Studio is a satirical comedy about a Hollywood movie studio, starring Seth Rogen, Catherine O’Hara, Chase Sui Wonders, amongst others. They took home a big 13 awards after Sunday night.

Severance’s Tramell Tillman made history as the first Black actor to win the Best Supporting Actor in a Drama. In his speech, he gave a heartfelt shoutout to his mother, which ensured there was no dry eye in the audience. Severance also won many awards the week prior at the Creative Arts Emmys.

At 15 years old, Owen Cooper made history as the youngest male acting Emmy winner with his victory. Adolescence scored big on Emmys night, with six awards under their belt. The series made a global splash earlier this year, focusing on a child who is arrested for murdering a classmate and all that comes after for the family.

The Penguin, one of the year’s biggest shows, set in Gotham, had its fair share of victories. The Pitt also won big as the best drama series, along with a few other awards that night. The series takes place in a hospital in Pittsburgh and has gained a lot of acclaim as a popular medical drama in recent years.

Some Snubs and Surprises

Jeff Hiller won Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy, a category many predicted Harrison Ford would take home for Shrinking. Many of the fellow nominees did cheer Hiller on, though, as he was announced the winner.

Many also predicted Kathy Bates to take home a win for Best Actress in a Drama Series, an award that went to Britt Lower for Severance

The Bear and The White Lotus also didn’t see many victories this time around, which is a huge switch from years prior, in which both series have taken awards home in multiple categories.

Other Highlights

Stephen Colbert got a standing ovation for his time on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, which is set to wrap up in 2026. It was Colbert’s first win for Outstanding Talk Series!

Nate Bargatze, Emmys host, also had a joke running throughout the night, that they’d take away money from the Boys & Girls Clubs of America charity fund they had going on, if acceptance speeches ran on too long. This might not have sat right with many audience members or viewers. The overall awards ceremony could have had a few more comedic beats – but everyone rushed to finish their speeches, including Hacks’ Hannah Einbinder, who joked that she’ll “pay the difference.”

Hannah Einbinder also gained a lot of applause for her iconic speech, “Go Birds, f*** ICE, and free Palestine.”
