Pop Break Live: My Morning Jacket at The Met in Philadelphia, PA on Friday October 10, 2025
My Morning Jacket played The Met in Philadelphia on Friday October 10th as part of the WXPN WELCOMES concert series. The band is currently on tour celebrating the release of their new album, Z, which they will be playing in its entirety on select dates of the tour.
My Morning Jacket is incredibly popular in the tri-state area, so much so that the show is the first of two consecutive nights the band is playing at The Met (plus four consecutive nights at Brooklyn Paramount).
Anecdotally, I clearly remember the feeling I had when I saw them for the very first time at WXPN’s three-day XPoNential Music Festival in 2015. It was simply awe-inspiring and the showmanship was out of this world. I can attest that October 10’s at The Met show was no different.
The show opened up with a an old fan favorite, “Steam Engine” which was off their 2003’s career defining album, It still Moves. The short intro to the song definitely had vibes from ELO and Pink Floyd and was the perfect pick to start the night off. From the very opening chords, this enthusiastic crowd was totally engaged during their entire set. This was a high energy show so you could see the band and audience were feeding off each other. Some of the songs that stood out earlier in the set were “Circuital,” which had some cool guitar distortions and “Mahgeetah,” which prompted a loud sing along but it was “Honest Man” and “Holdin On to Black Metal” that brought the house down.
Frontman Jim James and the band really pulled out all the stops. There were so many great jams and incredible solos. Besides being amazing musicians, their showmanship really shined through the entire show. It was reminiscent of the ’80s bands and very entertaining. The beautiful lighting on the stage was impressive as their were shifting colors throughout the set. The red and green lighting on the song “X-Mas Curtain” was a stunner.
The band ended their set with Gideon. The set was the perfect mix of old songs, fan favorites and a songs off their latest album Is. At the encore the band honored the legendary John Prine by playing his song “All the Best, on what would have been Prine’s 79th birthday. The show ended with “Dancefloors,” which ended with blistering guitars and a ferocious assault on the keys. James thanked the crowd for coming and said it was very healing for all us to be together sharing music. He got that right. It truly was a joyous night.
