Preview: Speed Racer #5 (Mad Cave Studios)

Go Speed, go! On the last exciting episode of Speed Racer, the brake lines are severed, Speed is out of control and in peril! But wait! Racer X was not too far behind, can he make it in time?

The action from last issue burns right into this week’s epic release. Kim Jugger’s presence as a main rival for Speed is well-crafted. David Pepose has a knack for taking negligible or low-tier characters in previous mediums, (check out Space Ghost for more!) and reformatting them into legit main event contenders for more than a simple “villain of the month.” The Black Jaguar is not only out to win a race, but to big rich by fulfilling the bounty in which Mr. Dante Ferno has place on Speed’s head.

The action kicks even further into high gear as Speed and Racer X have forced into working together to survive the onslaught from The Black Jaguar and the members of the CAT Team. We get a clear look into what motivates and fuels Racer X’s drive. There’s a ton to unpack from character growth and development. It’s not just Speed and Racer X we’re getting a good look into, but also into Kim Jugger, Trixie, and other characters revealed!

Very cool series of panels showing a PIT stop with Trixie’s team making repairs. But are they too late?

I always have to highlight the amazing job Davide Tinto and Rex Lokus deliver on a monthly basis. It’s hard to imagine a high-speed chase or death-defying race in the pages of a comic, because it’s not actually moving, we have to use our imaginations to picture the sharp drifts, the insane turns, the near-crashes, and more! One has to believe Tinto and Lokus have the same imagination but combined with this uncanny skill to make these cerebral images come to life. The panels are so brilliantly colored and pop right off the pages. Takes the reader’s imagination to the next level I imagine.

No spoilers here folks! Will Speed crash and burn or will he find another way to survive the constant threats on his life? Will Racer X remain friend or turn out to be another competitive foe? It seems Dante Ferno didn’t want to get his hands dirty but perhaps this may soon change! You want to know what Pepose and the PIT crew of Davide Tinto, Rex Lokus, and Buddy Beaudoin have in store? You’ll have to go to your local comic shop and pick up one of the best books of 2025.
