His & Hers, adapted from Alice Feeney’s best-selling novel of the same name, has an amazing storyline that slowly lures viewers in with surprising cliffhangers, leaving everyone speechless.
The series kicks off with local Dahlonega, Georgia, Detective Jack Harper (Jon Bernthal, The Punisher), receiving an anonymous message about a sudden murder in the woods. Upon his arrival to the crime scene he finds his estranged spouse, Anna (Tessa Thompson, Creed), who’s now a news reporter.
Anna has returned to her hometown after disappearing for a year, allowing her silence to be loud enough to accuse. Harper clashes with her due to the unsettled tension of her disappearance. He pours out his betrayal onto Anna, while brushing his own secrets under the rug. Anna and Harper continuously act suspicious, fueling them to investigate the other. Accusations start to simmer, as the two secretly spy on each other to see who can solve the case first or more so — who’s behind it. Harper and Anna continue to keep look-outs as they question possible suspects. Who can be behind this mystery? And … why commit such a crime?
Anna and Jack begin a competitive battle to see who can solve the case the quickest, benefiting their careers and perception. Past issues arise as the murder case continues, causing Anna to contemplate her role as a news reporter. Old bonds begin to untie, trust is threaded lightly, and uncertainty becomes the main topic. And despite all of the mistrust, the capability to trust again becomes a new challenge in this sudden mystery.
There are two sides to every story: yours and mine, ours and theirs, and as the title of the series suggest — his and hers. And of course, this all means someone is always lying.
Jon Bernthal does a phenomenal job balancing his secret and reality — balancing both becomes hard for him. His character craves affection from his disappearing wife and a world full of happiness. However, due to past trauma, it becomes difficult to want a healthy future with her. During the daytime, he tries to solve the murder case with his partner, yet secretly connects hidden clues to prevent getting caught with a connection to the case, at night. Jack is still deeply in love with Ana and avoids his feelings towards her because of her sudden disappearance.
Tessa Thompson plays her curious character so perfectly, sparking sudden suspicion in the audience — is she truly connected to the case more than we’d think? Everyone around her questions her sudden disappearance before this case, and how it can possibly align with it. Her character is very private and mysterious; she doesn’t like it when people ask too many questions or expect answers from her. This hometown case causes her to relive why she left.. Coming back as if nothing ever happened, allows her circle to question what her real agenda is. Once the story reaches the plot, viewers will begin to solve this case on their own before the real prime suspect comes to play.
The series is filmed and produced excellently; it’s a delightful breath of fresh air in what Netflix has in store for its audience in 2026 and setting the bar for what’s yet to come. The series captivates the audience’s attention with familiar faces playing the roles, and with an interesting plot introduced in the trailer when Anna cunningly shows her face in a crowded group of news reporters who arrived at the crime scene unnoticed; proceeding to ask Jack, “Detective Harper, Is it true that you knew her?” as he’s speaking to news reporters. Her sudden comment stunned him, and no further questions could be asked. Viewers become interested in what this plot can lead to, allowing them to engage with a series worth looking forward to. Not just because of the plot, it’s the amount of lessons you can learn — just by watching.
His & Hers is a series that combines mystery, unfinished love, and the importance of trust with those around you. With its beautiful message towards the end, each viewer learns a valuable lesson of their own, allowing them to love the show even more.
