Daredevil: Born Again has finally hit its mark–and not just with Bullseye. Episode 4 of Season 2 escapes the clutter of the first three episodes and presents a more grounded story to set up the rest of the season.
The episode opens with Benjamin “Dex” Poindexter (Wilson Bethel, Bates Motel), a.k.a. Bullseye, going through his daily routine. Dex’s tendencies mix manners and malice as he plots against the Anti Vigilante Task Force while ordering a milkshake. Dex’s crude attempts at working with Daredevil (Charlie Cox, Boardwalk Empire) are a comedic addition to this otherwise somber season.
Following the aftermath of the AVTF prisoner breakout, Matt Murdock and Karen Paige (Deborah Ann Woll, True Blood) help hide those they saved and prepare to gather their testimonies against Wilson Fisk (Vincent Donofrio, Law & Order: Criminal Intent). Fisk, meanwhile, is preparing for his big boxing match for the Born Again initiative.
The show-stealers in this episode are undoubtedly Fisk’s team. Daniel (Michael Gandolfini, The Many Saints of Newark) and BB (Genneya Walton, Project Mc²) have one of the most interesting subplots this season, and this episode teased the tension that is arising between them. Daniel’s admiration for both Fisk and BB blinds him from each of their hidden motives: it’s only a matter of time before he must choose one over the other.
Episodes 1-3 of Daredevil: Born Again suffered from erratic editing. Episode 4 discarded the constant cutting between Matt and Fisk’s scenes, allowing each scene to stand by itself and feel intact. While the editing is still goofy, it seems more intentional and is easier to digest as a viewer.
Season 2 of Daredevil: Born Again started off rocky but has found its rhythm. Episode 4 is an indication that unlike Fisk, this reboot is redeemable.
