A “Weird” Al Yankovic concert is a hilarious journey through the past 50+ years of the great American songbook. The 66-year-old singer/songwriter has created works of comedic genius lampooning the most popular songs, films, TV shows and pop culture trends of all-time. From Michael Jackson and Nirvana to Star Wars and Dangerous Minds to grammar issues and eBay—there’s nothing the accordion-wielding Yankovic hasn’t touched upon in his songs.
The “Bigger & Weirder” Tour kicked off with “Weird” Al coming out of his tour bus and walking to the stage—while opener Puddles Pity Party tried following him on stage and failing to get payback for a pie thrown in his face. Once Yankovic hit the stage, the crowd roared in excitement. For the next two hours, the Central Jersey audience was enraptured by the epic setlist delivered by Al and his wildly talented band.
One of the biggest reactions of the night came when the singer took the crowd during his ballad parody “One More Minute.” After this song, he and the band disappeared for a costume change. He emerged dressed like Kurt Cobain and ripped into “Smells Like Nirvana.” This brought the crowd to their feet and began a 100 mph run of classics including an 11-song medley which featured “It’s All About the Pentiums,” “Bedrock Anthem,” “My Bologna,” “Eat It,” and “My Bologna.” He then tore into the all-timer “Fat,” followed by The Captain Underpants Theme, “White & Nerdy,” and arguably his most iconic song, “Amish Paradise.”
Yankovic would close out the night with a gigantic tribute to Star Wars — with a cavalcade of stormtroopers, R2D2, and of course, Weird Al dressed like a Jedi. He delivered the songs “Yoda” and the “American Pie”-inspired “The Saga Begins.”
“Weird” Al Yankovic in concert is a perfect cure for a rough day, week, month or year. The show is an unabashed celebration of things weird, fun and hilarious. As a performer, while the singer may be nearing 70, he has an unstoppable motor and hits every note as crisply as he did when he recorded the songs for the first time.
Run, don’t walk to see Weird Al in concert.
