We’re already two weeks into the new season of Big Brother, and the show has not disappointed. We’ve had a showmance, a split house, a player fake crying about his mother only to get caught, and last but not least — a player shoved into a volcano by a velociraptor. Yes, you read that correctly. The show is back at it with their crazy antics, and this season is starting to feel like old school Big Brother.
This season started off with 14 new players, but a twist was added. Three reality TV icons, Angela Murray from BB26, along with Survivor 50 players Rick Devens and Dee Valladares, returned to the game. However, before Dee entered the game, producers did a fake-out where they brought in Big Brother legend Rachel Reilly and had her “pushed into a volcano.” You can’t even make this stuff up.
For the first HOH, only the three icons were able to compete, and the newbies could only compete in a safety competition. This is one of the major issues with this season so far. To some people, it seems as if the veterans are getting an unfair advantage to start off the game. There’s really no way for the producers to win in this situation, because it makes sense that they’re trying to give the icons a footing in the game instead of just being targeted as big threats right away. It sucks for the newbies, but this is usually the way it goes for seasons with a small amount of returnees.
The other big twist of the season is the BB Time Capsule, where throughout the first six weeks of the season America will vote for contestants to compete for a chance to win a power-up or a past Big Brother punishment. Hopefully, the power-ups don’t completely ruin the integrity of the game as we’ve seen in the past.
Without spoiling anything related to who’s won what competition or who’s been voted out, there have been many interesting things that have happened on the show. There was an immediate showmance between Rome and Lyric. Ashley told everyone she’s never eaten a hamburger. We saw Jason cry to Angela about how he felt like she was his mother in the house and was still grieving his actual mother’s death. The moment Angela left, Jason made a face to the cameras and bragged to other players about how he was playing Angela. The truth eventually got back to Angela and the two argued with each other in front of the entire house. This is the stuff that Big Brother’s been missing in recent seasons. We’ve also seen a split house in terms of alliances, which is always a good thing for Big Brother. This season has a lot of people with strategic potential, especially Drew and Barrett, who have been heavily playing every side of the house. It will be interesting to see how that pans out.
So far, this season has brought back everything the last few seasons were missing. Fights, showmances, and a cast where everyone really wants to win. If the first two weeks are any indication, Big Brother 28 has the potential to be one of the franchise’s strongest seasons in years. Hopefully, the momentum continues.
