The best time to get into reading comic books is right now. With incredible titles from Marvel, DC, and plenty more publishers all dropping weekly, there is no better time than the present to go to your local comic book store and discover a new favorite.
Many people have the same question when it comes to getting into comic books. Where do I start? Although some characters’ histories can be dated back to the 1930’s, there are still plenty of current runs that you can hop into with little to no knowledge of the characters. Here are a few recommendations of comic books that you should be reading right now!
Marvel Comics
Captain America (2025), written by Chip Zdarsky with art by Valerio Schitli, has been a consistently good spot for new readers to jump into Captain America. Steve Rogers awakens from the ice to a world he doesn’t recognize. Battles are fought in the shadows, villains aren’t as easy to identify, and Captain America is dropped right in the middle of it.
When Victor Von Doom conquers Latveria, it is up to Steve Rogers to adapt to his brand new world and learn how to fight in a time he doesn’t recognize. With Zdarsky at the helm, the writing is a standout amongst current Marvel titles; it also doesn’t hurt that Schitli’s art is gorgeous and able to capture the tone of the story perfectly. As Steve Rogers is set to face off with Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday (2026), now is the perfect time to catch up on the untold tale of their first encounter.
Daredevil (2026) is the perfect title for anyone looking to dive into the street-level of the Marvel Universe. Written by Stephanie Phillips with art by Lee Garbett, Daredevil (2026) follows Daredevil as the new fearsome supervillain Omen is hunting after Daredevil’s real-life counterpart, Matt Murdock.
Fans of Daredevil are treated to incredible action, while fans of Matt Murdock get to see him find his place in the world after years of being a lawyer. Garbett’s art is beautiful, and his panel layout allows for creative new ways of storytelling. Daredevil is one of Marvel’s most popular characters, and his current comic run is only adding to his greatness.
DC Comics
The Fury of Firestorm (2026) will introduce you to your new favorite character while telling a heartbreaking tale of love and loss. Ronnie Raymond has lost control of the Firestorm Matrix, leaving the community of Bedford, Colorado to suffer the consequences. Firestorm has always been a unique character, but never one that got to the same popularity as his Justice League counterparts.
Written by Jeff Lemire with art by Rafael de Latorre, The Fury of Firestorm reintroduces the character to readers, acting as a perfect jumping-on point for anyone looking to learn the Firestorm mythos. Lemire and Latorre are one of the strongest duos in comics currently, combining heartbreaking storytelling with jaw-dropping art to create one of DC’s best current ongoing series.
Starting only two years ago, the Absolute Universe has broken records and set the bar high for future versions of DC’s favorite characters. While all of the “Absolute” titles are spectacular in their own way, the current standouts are Absolute Batman (2024), Absolute Wonder Woman (2024), and Absolute Superman (2024). Stripping these characters away from some of their most iconic traits and mythos has led to some of the best stories you should be reading right now.
Batman grew up poor, Diana was born in hell, Superman lived on Krypton, and so much more for all the characters in the Absolute Universe. These stories are gritty, darker, and gruesome, but that doesn’t take away from the emotional storytelling behind all the violence. Plenty of these characters have gotten new iconic looks from the Absolute Universe, cementing these stories as all-timers that will be talked about for generations.
