Review: The Muppets Take the Marvel Universe #1

The Muppets Take the Marvel Universe is a thing of beauty.

This one-shot, which dropped on September 23, features Kermit, Miss Piggy, Fozzie, and the gang as they crash into the Marvel Universe in a series of short stories penned and illustrated by such luminaries as Chip Zdarsky (Avengers: Armaggedon), Pete Woods (Marvel 1776), Ashley Allen (Tomb of Apocalypse), and Goldbergs creator Adam F. Goldberg.

The stories include:

  • “The Greatest Show (Not) On Earth: Rowlf the Dog is kidnapped by Mojo, so the Muppets jump the multiverse and, with the help of Howard the Duck, assemble a super team to rescue the piano-playing dog from the MojoVerse.
  • Pigs of the Galaxy: The Pigs in Space crew meet Rocket and Groot.
  • Just What the Chef Ordered: Dr. Strange regrettably recruits The Swedish Chef to make Clea’s favorite soup.
  • A Terrible Invention: Hank Pym and Bruce Banner are the guests of Bunson and Beecker … everything goes wrong.
  • Bad Man: Wolverine hitchhikes with The Electric Mayhem — mayhem ensure.
  • Muppets Assemble!: Various Muppets try out for The Avengers

All of these stories are as silly, wonderful, and lovingly written and drawn as you’d expect. The care these writers and artists took to create their segments clearly reflects their appreciation for The Muppets.

But it’s not the larger-than-life adventure and multiversal mayhem that make this one-shot a must for Marvel and Muppet fans alike—it’s the humor. One of the first laugh-out-loud moments comes when Emma Frost first meets Miss Piggy and does a full scan of her. She loudly proclaims to Wolverine, “She’s everything … and I would die for her!” Game obviously recognizes game here, as these two are a match made in heaven.

The team-ups generate a lot of fun as Peter Parker and Fozzie Bear are astonishingly perfect together. On paper, you’d think Fozzie and Deadpool would be the natural pairing, but the dad jokes cut both ways, as in the sincerest way possible.

If you’re a deep-cut Muppet-head, the panel below is just Louver-worthy.

This one-shot is once again proof positive that The Muppets do indeed have a place in 2026. If the Emmy Award-winning Muppet Show special told us anything, modern-day pop culture can easily find a home in the nostalgia world of Kermit and company. And while it’ll never happen — watching all of this unfold in real life on a Marvel-themed Muppet special with the actual cast of Avengers: Doomsday would be a massive home run.
