New York Comic Con proves that anyone can wear the mask.

The event, sponsored by Jazwares and Disney Consumer Products, saw hundreds of fans clad in various red-and-blue spider suits (provided by Jazwares) gathered outside of Hall 1D, waiting to see if they could beat the Guinness World Record for most people in a Spider-man costume at one time.

The record to beat was 685 participants. Sadly, the crowd that gathered only reached 649 participants. Despite some dedicated fans calling for a recount, the number was final.

Thomas Schilling, the event coordinator, was not surprised by the turnout. Schilling grew up as a Spider-Man fan and a New York local, and thinks that New York Comic Con has the hometown advantage. He was, of course, wearing his favorite Spider-Man suit: the classic red-and-blue.

Participants of all ages and genders happily mingled and danced before the crowd. Suits from all movies and games could be seen in the crowd.

Even though this crowd didn’t beat the world record, Schilling says it’s still a perfect time to be a Spider-Man fan. New York Comic Con gave these fans a great reason to dress up as their favorite hero, but Schilling says, “Don’t forget about Halloween right around the corner.”
