I’ll be honest; I wasn’t hyped going into this film. The original Point Break (starring Keanu Reeves and the late Patrick Swayze) is one of my favorite action films of the ’90s and one I still hold very dear to my heart. And when I heard it was getting the remake treatment, apprehension took over. But so did excitement because with today’s ways of filming action we could have gotten an incredible retelling of a pretty badass film. Unfortunately, we got this load of crap!
Everything about this film is bad. The action is so fake, so green-screen; I couldn’t tell what was real and fake. Hell, the people looked fake half the time as well. The story is just as bad, taking all the great moments from the original and updating them to appeal more today’s audiences that honestly don’t care enough. Why is this important you ask? Well because no one was in the theater when I saw this. Yes, no one. Instead of seeing Point Break, people were focusing more on seeing The Force Awakens again or taking their kids to see The Road Chip.
So how’s the acting? Atrocious! It’s no secret that Keanu Reeves is not a world-renowned thespian but the intensity he brings to the original film is unmatched. He’s awesome, even if not very good. And Swayze is…well, Swayze (also awesome). But Edgar Ramirez and Luke Bracey (our new Bodhi and Johnny Utah, respectively) are GOD AWFUL. I don’t know why casting directors feel good looks and muscles are passable when your acting ability is on par with that of a doorknob.
I’m sorry this is a shorter review then usual. I feel like all my thoughts (and your possible thoughts as well) were perfectly summed up. Remakes are fine, as long as they’re done right. Point Break is not. It is bad in every aspect of filmmaking and I beg you not to see it. By the looks of it, you haven’t.
