Pop-Break Live: Happy Mondays with Lowlight, Godlings & Cold Weather Company
The rain did not keep fans from enjoying this week’s Happy Mondays show at the Wonder Bar. The music of The Godlings, Cold Weather Company and Lowlight kept the audience in high spirits.
After grabbing a drink at the bar, listeners were treated to the jazz-infused rock sound of The Godlings, who kicked off the evening. The hand percussion gave off a surf rock vibe, while the saxophone amped up the jazz and had listeners tapping their feet and bobbing their heads. The Godlings were clearly at ease on stage, and it worked to relax the audience and made them kick back and enjoy the welcoming presence of the band while they jammed out. Toward the end of the set, I found that the guitar solos increased and the heavier rock sound came out and entwined with the other genre influences.
The trio Cold Weather Company began their set with a cover of Adele’s “Hello.” It grabbed the attention of the listeners just in time for the transition into their recently released single, “Wide-Eyed.” The song brings about a rush of emotions that could easily trigger tears to flow. The main character in “Wide-Eyed” has pushed his fears aside with conviction to love again. He devotes himself wholeheartedly to his darling—his hazel-eyed mountain song. Cold Weather Company’s set continued to make a powerful impact on the audience with intricate instrumental build-ups and breakdowns, vocal harmonies, catchy choruses and memorable themes—from the nostalgia of “From Rest” to the mysterious aggression of “Reflection.”
Lowlight had fans rocking to their bluesy, folk-rock music. Their songs make listeners want to relax with a glass of whiskey in hand while swaying to the tunes. The Hammond organ synth gives a blues vibe to many of the songs, such as “Track and Field,” which has a western feel to it and reminds one of an intense shootout in the Wild West. Another highlight of their set was the foreboding sound of “Dirt,” featuring powerful instrumental breakdowns that keep fans captivated. Lowlight ended the night with their rendition of David Bowie’s song “Heroes” as a tribute.
