Steven DeKnight to Helm Pacific Rim 2
After being put on hold back in September, Legendary Pictures is now moving forward with Pacific Rim 2. Steven DeKnight, creator of Spartacus and Marvel’s Daredevil showrunner, has signed on to direct the sequel.
Guillermo del Toro, who directed the original 2013 film, had been set to begin shooting in November of 2015 when the project was taken off Legendary Pictures 2017 release schedule. Now, with DeKnight directing, del Toro will return to Pacific Rim 2 as a producer alongside Thomas Tull, Jon Jashni and Mary Parent and Jillian Share as executive producer.
DeKnight is credited as executive producer and head writer for Marvel’s Daredevil on Netflix which will be premiering its second season later this year. He also created Spartacus which ran on Starz from 2010 to 2013 and has written episodes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Smallville, and Angel. Pacific Rim 2, though, will mark DeKnight’s feature directorial debut.
Prometheus writer Jon Spaihts will write the screenplay for the sequel. Pacific Rim originally starred Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day and Robert Kazinsky though it’s unclear if the actors will be back in Pacific Rim 2.
There is no scheduled release date as of yet.
