The Force is strong with this one.
For all us die hard fans in a galaxy far far away (across the pond), the Star Wars Celebration, currently in London, has just released a stunning montage of footage from the upcoming pseudo prequel Rogue One. This isn’t so much of a sneak peek into the story, but a showcase of monumental sets, improbable practical effects, and an array of throwback costume and puppet designs.
The overall feel for the film is a nostalgic experience, after all it does occur prior the events of A New Hope. The textures of the sets and costumes (specifically classic Stormtrooper suits) don’t appear overly glossy, and are just the right amount of grittiness. There is even a delightful appearance by Warwick Davis, who played an Ewok in Return of the Jedi and is set to be in the upcoming film.
With behind-the-scenes footage that may be more gorgeous than the actual film, the team and cast of Rogue One are certainly setting the bar high.
We also got a look at new images, and artwork (pictured above) for the film as well.
The film is set post-Clone Wars, and follows a ragtag squad of Rebel alliance fighters who are brought together to steal the plans for the Death Star, which the Galactic Empire is building.
The film stars Oscar nominee Felicity Jones (Theory of Everything) as Jyn Erso, who looks to be the antihero and put-upon leader of the unit. Other cast members shown in the teaser include: Diego Luna (Y tu mama tambien, Milk), Oscar winner Forrest Whitaker (Last King of Scotland), Donnie Yen (Iron Monkey), and Ben Mendelsohn (Animal Kingdom, The Dark Knight Rises) who will be one of the main villains of the film. Not in the teaser, but officially cast in the film are: Madds Mikkelsen (Hannibal), Alan Tudyk (Firefly), and Riz Ahmed (Nightcrawler).
The film is directed by Gareth Edwards who directed the cult sci-fi film Monsters, and the most recent Godzilla film.
Rogue One: A Stars Wars Story is set for theatrical release on December 16, 2016.
