It appears Larry Wilmore will be signing off a bit earlier than expected.
As reported by Variety, The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore has been cancelled due to a failing in efforts to gain more viewership.
The Nightly Show, which started as a replacement after The Colbert Report came to an end in 2015, will come to an end this Thursday.
Comedy Central president Kent Alterman spoke to Variety about the decision to pull the plug on the late night comedy show.
“We hold Larry in the highest esteem, personally and professionally. He brought a strong voice and point of view to the late-night landscape. Unfortunately it hasn’t resonated with our audience. We’ve been monitoring it closely as for a year and a half now and we haven’t seen the signs we need in ratings or in consumption on digital platforms. We’ve been been hoping it would grow.”
In an additional statement from the shows star, Wilmore said, “I’m really grateful to Comedy Central, Jon Stewart, and our fans to have had this opportunity. But I’m also saddened and surprised we won’t be covering this crazy election or ‘The Unblackening’ as we’ve coined it. And keeping it 100, I guess I hadn’t counted on ‘The Unblackening’ happening to my time slot as well.”
While talks have been made for a replacement for the slot this show once held, Alterman has said it would be unlikely one would be ready before the start of the new year.
In the meantime, @Midnight will be filling the slot while Wilmore will return to his roots as a show-runner and writer.
