Pre-Trailer Thoughts: Clint Eastwood’s track record recently, as far as a director, has been a mixed bag. For his latest “behind the camera” film, he focuses on the “Miracle on the Hudson” true story that tells the story of Chelsey “Sully” Sullenberger, who landed a plane on the aformentioned river after the engines fail. I wish this was movie was really a tie-in to the Uncharted movie franchise that hasn’t even been announced yet, but that’s a story for another day. -LJF
Pre-Trailer Thoughts: I think it’s a safe bet that everyone remembers the “Miracle on the Hudson” where Captain Sully Sullenberger saved hundred of lives in a crash landing. Yes the stakes were high and it wound up being one of the more famously heroic moments of the past couple years, but exactly how much drama can they wring out of something like this? The actual crash happened over several minutes and Sully was hailed as a hero pretty much immediately. The presence of Tom Hanks as well as Clint Eastwood in the director’s chair makes this interesting, but I’m skeptical if they can pull this off. – JTM
Rate the Trailer: 2 out of 5. Eastwood’s camera work is always stunning, and Hanks can really do no wrong, but otherwise this trailer is not really working for me. I have a feeling they are trying to make this Oscar bait, as Hanks is always prey to a gold man statue, but I don’t think this will have the same impact American Sniper did. Then again, who knows? Truth be told, it’ll definitely be a step up from Jersey Boys though. -LJF
Rate the Trailer: 3 out of 5. I’m getting the feeling that they’re drawing a lot of inspiration from Robert Zemeckis’ Flight for this, right down to the pilot being suspected of having drinking and other personal issues. The difference is Flight was a made up story, while we already know that there was really no wrongdoing on Sully’s part. I just can’t shake the feeling that they’re trying to squeeze blood out of a stone to find more drama where there really isn’t any. Maybe this is a film that will work better for someone who has no knowledge of the incident, but it’s just too fresh on my mind for me to feel any sort of tension or drama here. – JTM
Theater, Rent, No Thanks, Undecided? No Thanks. Despite a strong actor and director, I think I will (boarding?) pass on Sully. -LJF
Theater, Rent, Undecided, No Thanks? No Thanks. Unless this winds up getting absolutely stellar reviews, I don’t have much interest here at all. Even Tom Hanks’ always charming presence can’t drag me into the theater for this one. – JTM
