After a strong first issue, Tarzan on the Planet of the Apes #2 starts with a massive time jump and it feels like the story has started all over again. In the incredible first issue (http://pop-break.com/2016/09/28/review-tarzan-planet-apes-1/), readers saw Tarzan battling dinosaurs and poachers on the continent of Africa along side of the super intelligent Apes from Planet of the Apes. This comic starts off years later after Tarzan has gone to England to live with humans. This is a disappointing plot twist because it skips out on all of the promise of the fun world that was set up in the first issue. It is also very disorienting as a reader because the reader has to figure out the updated backstory of all these characters all over again.
Since Tarzan on the Planet of the Apes #2 is essentially an all new story with a just couple of the same characters of the first issue, the question is, how is this new story?
It isn’t bad. The table has been reset for a battle between the Apes and the Humans with Tarzan as the last ambassador between the two. It feels a lot like Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, except with Tarzan instead of Jason Clarke (which I do believe is a massive improvement). It takes awhile to get to the action due to all the resetting, but it looks like the story is going somewhere debatably more thoughtful at the end… that is, as long as they don’t time jump the next issue and reset everything again.
