Yesterday Marvel Television announced that The Inhumans, previously scheduled as a 2019 film release before being indefinitely delayed, is being reworked into a new TV series. The two-episode premiere will debut in IMAX theaters for two weeks in September, before starting on ABC for the fall 2017 season with additional content. The two episodes will be shot entirely with digital IMAX cameras.
Dan Buckley, President, Marvel Television, Publishing & Brand said, “In an ever-changing world of distribution and consumption, it’s very exciting to be part of a groundbreaking initiative that takes us to the forefront of this evolution.”
IMAX CEO Rich Gelfond was similarly enthusiastic. He proclaimed, “This first-of-its-kind multi-platform production, distribution and marketing agreement brings together Marvel Television’s unique brand of entertainment, ABC’s unparalleled audience and IMAX’s brand and global fanboy demographic.”
The Inhumans will tell the story of Black Bolt and the Royal Family. Like many other Marvel characters, they were created by writer Stan Lee and artist Jack Kirby.
The Inhuman race was introduced to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and remain a constant presence through characters like Daisy Johnson, AKA Quake (Chloe Bennet). What this means for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., a series with dangerously low ratings, remains to be seen.
