Boards, Tunes, & Cocktails: 2017 Asbury Park Surf Music Festival Preview

The 2017 Asbury Park Surf Music Festival is here…and it’s going to be epic.

The festival, produced by Hi-Tide Recordings, and the brainchild of Vincent Minervino, and Magdalena O’Connell, has come a long way since its humble beginnings in 2014.

This year the festival will take place over four days, and includes a number of events — ranging from concerts to brunch to tattoos to movies.

The event is sponsored by: Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum, Flor de Caña Rum, DiPinto Guitars, Asbury Park Brewery, Makin Waves, The Asbury Hotel, Russo Music Asbury Park, D’Addario and Co./Evans Drumheads, Bettie’s Bombshells, Surfrider Foundation: Jersey Shore Chapter, Electric Tattoo Asbury and Green Bean Creative.

Here’s the breakdown…

Thursday August 24:

ASPMF Welcome Cocktail Hour

Join like-minded surf music fans (and maybe even band members) at the critically-claimed Asbury Hotel, located on the corner of 5th and Kingsley. DJ Hi-Tide will be spinning vinyl surf and lounge records from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. This is a no cover event, 21+ to enter

The Legendary Dick Dale at The Wonder Bar

Universal Music Tribe, run by the famed concert promoter Tony Pallagrosi, presents Dick Dale’s annual Jersey Shore appearance at The Wonder Bar. If you’ve never seen Dick Dale perform before, you’re truly missing out one of the true showmen of all-time. Hi-Tide Recordings artists The Men in Grey Suits from Montreal, Canada. Friday August 25:

Aloha Friday Beach Sweep

Do some good in the neighborhood! From 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. join everyone from APSMF as they join the Surfrider Foundation to clean the North Beach. This is the beach the festival will take place at.

Aloha Friday APSMF Pre-Party

Get in the vibe with a super cool pre-game at The Anchor’s Bend. The super fun Bongo Surf perform while DJ Hi-Tide spins surf and lounge vinyl. There will be tropical cocktails and a full dinner menu available. This a no cover event, but 21+ to enter. Aloha attire is encouraged. Pre-game runs from 8 p.m. to 12 a.m.

Saturday August 26

There will be vendors selling super cool stuff in the Grand Arcade of Convention Hall from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Pigments of Imagination at The Upper Deck Shuffleboard Club

Begins at 12 p.m. Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum Ambassador Daniel “Gravy” Thomas tells tales of bold tattoos, and exotic cocktails. The Coolest Guitars in the World at The Upper Deck Shuffleboard Club

Begins at 4:00 p.m. Chris DiPinto of DiPinto guitars holds court talking about the history of twangin’ guitars, plus doing some demos. Members of of Straitjackets. Advance registration and APSMF 2017 wristband required | Cash bar & snacks available | Register at hitiderecordings.eventbrite.com

World Famous Asbury Park Twist Contest

The contest happens on stage at the Asbury Park Surf Music Fest! Be there at 6 p.m. to do the “Asbury Twist” during Black Flamingos’ set. Judges include: Disco Mike, Shermy Freeman, and Jukebox Jodi. Winners get prizes from Sourpuss Clothing.

Surfrider Foundation Surfboard Giveaway

Giveaway happens at 8:30 p.m. If you attend the Aloha Friday pre-party, or if you grab a raffle ticket at the Surfrider booth at the Grand Arcade during the fest — you can enter to win a custom surfboard.

The Official Surf Music Fest After Party

The after party begins at 10 p.m. DJ Jukebox Jodi spins on the promenade of The Anchor’s Bend. The Men in Grat Suits, and DJ Felton Fink provide the music at the Upperdeck Shuffleboard Club. If you’re going to the Shuffleboard Club there’s snacks, a full bar, and free shuffleboard. These shows are free, open to the public, and are 21+ to enter.

Sunday August 27

Tiki Brunch

From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. enjoy a special tiki brunch. There’s a full brunch menu, tropical music, and wonderful, relaxing tropical music from Slowey and the Boats.

Surf Sunday at Electric Tattoo

Head from the beach over to Electric Tattoo located Lake Avenue (next to the Lakehouse complex) for a special Sunday. Presented by Hi-Tide and Sailor Jerry, the popular AP ink shop will be doing tropical flash tattoo specials from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m.

The Hangover Pool Party

It might be a rough Sunday post-festival, so why not hang poolside at The Asbury Hotel? The Hangover Pool Party goes from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. and features poolside cocktails and live music from TarantinosNYC, Plato Zorba, and DJ Foggy Notion. The event is co-sponsored by Bettie’s Bombshells, a fantastic retro swimwear store located on the boardwalk, and run by musician Tara Elliott. This is a no cover event, open to the public. Must be 21+ to enter.

Point Break Comes Alive!

Great White Caps present one of the most fun live experiences of all-time. The famed surf rock band scores the all-time cult classic action film Point Break. Don’t worry this is the Keanu Reeves/Patrick Swayze version not that lame ass 2015 remake. There’s a full bar for adults and a snack bar for all ages. $10 admission includes popcorn & soft drink.
