logan j. fowler and bill bodkin look at the new cancer-themed comedy …
Theater, Rent, No Thanks, Undecided? Rent (but possibly theater).
When I first saw the trailer for 50/50, I was taken aback. Yes, it features Seth Rogen, who has been typecast as the slacker/stoner in raunchy comedies. However, the clips that I saw demonstrated that this flick could be different from his past fare, as it deals with Joseph’s Gordon Levitt’s (an actor on my “to watch” list) character coping with cancer. Rogen, who co-wrote the film, said that cancer can be funny (his reasoning behind the penning of 50/50), and while some of the elements shown in the trailer did make me chuckle, I really think 50/50 has the possibility of people shedding tears and reaching for tissues. With that said, the film definitely looks interesting and heartfelt, and I may check it out when it releases in theaters. If not there, then it is definitely on the must watch list come rental time.

Own, Rent, Avoid, Undecided: Rent.
50/50 might refer to the chances that Joseph Gordon Levitt’s character may have of surviving his cancer diagnosis, but to me, it also refers to my fears of what this comedy could become. There’s a 50/50 chance that the comedy will become greatly outweighed about the gut-wrenching tragedy of cancer and death. This chance just is a little too high for me to commit to seeing this in theater. I’m a fan of Seth Rogen, despite some of his recent missteps, and JLG is always awesome — even in G.I. Joe. But there’s just this gut feeling I have that the drama is going to turn what could be a very raucous comedy into a tearjerker. So I’ll pass on this film until I can have the pause button and a box of tissues nearby.

See I’m kind of a big fan of movies that has great laughs but have really dramatic topics. I’m super interested in this movie. And I could be wrong, but isn’t this based on a true story?
