Pitch Perfect 3: The Bellas End on a High Note

Ever since the “acca-awesome movie,” Pitch Perfect was released in 2012 and has created a buzz around the world. It has become one of the favorite “college movies” of the millennial generation because so many instances in our lives are reflected in the film.

The original film follows a collegiate a cappella group called The Barden Bellas, as they accept new freshman members and prepare for yet another season. From the outside, you may think that the message of the movie is based solely on the talk of a cappella, but if you look deeper, you may notice that it is much more than that. The film displays the transition that teenagers in society today are faced with when entering the college world. It is all about making friends and finding oneself in a new world.

In 2015, the much-anticipated sequel of Pitch Perfect was released. The sequel mainly focused on an international a cappella competition that The Barden Bellas entered that no American team had ever won. The sequel received many negative reviews, and I am not sure why. It played off of the original, gave us more, and was funny and entertaining. I know I found myself laughing with my friends throughout multiple parts.

Now, two years later, Pitch Perfect 3 is released, and the world rushes into the theatres to see the highly anticipated film yet again.

Pitch Perfect 3 focuses on the Bellas after winning the world championships. The excitement has worn down, and the team has split up and gone their own ways. Unfortunately, they haven’t been very successful on their own, so when they find out about the possibility of reuniting for an overseas USO tour, they jump at the opportunity and get together. Together they, of course, make some music, some interesting decisions, get into trouble, and have one last hurrah together as a family.

There are a few scenes that feel unneeded to the movie, many revolving around Fat Amy’s dad, but at the same time, it brings something new and thrilling to the plot. There is also a lot of talk focused on American Record Producer, DJ Khaled, which I feel is a little much and towards the end begins to feel like a promotion for Khaled. You almost begin to feel like the movie is revolving around him and not the Barden Bellas, which is kind of annoying.

However, the majority of the movie is great. There is singing of popular and pumped up songs, cheesy lines, flirting, dirty jokes, and of course a reunion. What else could you want? During the end credits, there is a recap of all of the memories of the Barden Bellas throughout the years of being together, and if you are a Pitch Perfect fan, it sure takes you on a trip back down memory lane. It reminds me of what it’s like when you flip through your yearbooks or photo albums and see the many fun memories that you and your friends have made together over the years. So bittersweet.

Pitch Perfect yet again displays another great life lesson, but instead of being based on the transition into college as it was in the first film, it is the transition into the real world. It is based on an epic friendship and displays how coming together as friends and building each other up is one of the best things you can do. Overall, this film is the perfect ending to the Pitch Perfect series.
