The final episode of Hulu’s Castle Rock premieres today (September 12). The series has thrown so much at us. It’s made us question everything we know about each character, and every aspect of the story. Some people love it, some people hate it.
Then there was last week’s episode. The entire narrative changed with some pretty intense revelations. However, heading into the final episode there are six questions we absolutely need answered by the time the credits roll on this season.
1. Who killed the deaf man who heard the Voice of God in the woods?
This is probably the most trivial question, but I’ve got to think it ties into the overall plot somehow. Remember when Molly (Melanie Lynskey) saved Henry from the winnebago in Episode 8? It was a crazy scene, but we saw Odin Branch (Charles Jones) lying dead in the woods? Who killed him? And what happened to his apprentice Willie (Kieran Culkin)? Did Molly kill both of them? Did Willie kill Odin before Odin made him deaf in order to truly hear the Voice of God? That winnebago scene wasn’t there just to be weird, there’s more to it than what we saw, so hopefully this will be answered.
2. From the trivial to the biggest question of them all — how are they going to correct the timelines?
As we discovered in Episode 9, Bill Skarsgård is actually Henry Deaver … from another dimension/timeline. Didn’t see that one coming did you? I thought he was the devil or the angel of death, something mystical. Nope, he’s a dude from another dimension. So, the question is … how are they going to be get him back to his timeline? Do they just go back to the woods and hope they end up in that rift in time? Henry (Andre Holland) has gone back to the woods where he originally found the rift, and nothing happened. Also, we need to get Holland’s and Skarsgård’s version of Henry on the same page, and get them to the “kid” back to his world. That isn’t going to be easy.
3. Which begs the question, if Skarsgård’s Deaver is returned to his timeline, will things be better?
Skarsgård’s timeline was way better for literally everyone, but his parent’s. (Granted his mom (Sissy Spacek) did end up with Pangborn (Scott Glenn), and had a happy life until dementia takes hold of her mind.) Castle Rock is thriving as a small town, Molly (before he death) was sober and doing well, and Zalewski (Noel Fisher) was a sheriff’s deputy. Skarsgård’s Deaver was a successful doctor, excited for his wife to be pregnant, and on the verge of finding a cure for Alzheimer’s.
It wasn’t until Holland’s Deaver shows up that things go bad — including Molly’s death.
So you have to wonder if they are both out of the same timeline, will Skarsgård’s Deaver return “shortly” after his disappearance, much like Holland’s Deaver?
Then there is Andre Holland’s incarnation of Henry. Once Skarsgård’s version is sorted — how does Holland’s character’s life get fixed? Or does it? Castle Rock is murderous disaster, on the verge of being engulfed in flames. He has a shattered family life. He’s a failure as an attorney. Does having his timeline sorted by Skarsgård being removed from it, make things better?
4. What’s the point of Jackie Torrance (Jane Levy)?
Yes, she saved Henry’s life in Episode 8, with an axe none the less. But, what is her function in this series? She’s barely been in the series, and outside of her explaining the in-joke of her name (and saving Henry), she’s had no real purpose.
5. Someone’s going to die (they have to) — who’s it going to be?
Smart money would be Molly (again). She’s got a lot to atone for in the Holland’s Deaver storyline, and sacrificing herself would make the most sense. This would (kinda sorta) make up for killing Henry’s dad. Could one of the Henry’s die? Would they kill off Jackie Torrance? I mean what would be the point?
Could they kill off one of the Henrys?
This is interesting. Both versions have spent 27 years trapped in the wrong reality without every aging, yet have only been gone from their actual timeline for a matter of days. Skarsgård’s Deaver definitely has more to do in his timeline both with being a father, and potentially curing Alzheimer’s. Holland’s Deaver, is super down on his luck, and could use a stroke of good luck. It’d be a real gut shot if either (or BOTH) of these characters met their demise.
6. They said it was an anthology series. Will we get a tease of Season 2 in this episode?
Things I don’t want to happen — we get a weird cliffhanger ending. I want the Deaver storyline done. I don’t want one of them pulling a Doctor Who and they end up in a new timeline and “stay tuned for next season!” That works in Doctor Who, not Castle Rock. Give me a clean ending of the Deaver storyline, and yes go ahead and give me a glimpse of next season. Or don’t. I’m fine with either.
