This month, the CW’s DC superheroes will be throwing their capes and spandex back on as they prepare for another season of action, Easter eggs, and epic crossovers.
While preparing for her fourth outing as one of primetime’s favorite heroes, along with making her Broadway debut in Beautiful, Melissa Benoist flew by San Diego Comic Con and spoke to us about what we can expect next season.
We discussed Kara’s doppelgänger, the show’s mission to explore social justice, and whether a certain legendary filmmaker could return to the director’s chair anytime soon.
What changes can we expect in Season 4?
From the scripts I’ve seen, the tone is very different in a really cool way. Last year was a lot of fire and brimstone, and witchcraft and fantasy. It was an homage to Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which I loved. This season it’s going to be a little more topical. It’ll be grounded a little more in the state of the world today, and how those issues would relate in National City.
How has it been jumping from filming the show to performing on Broadway to back to filming the show?
I’m having so much fun in New York. I just had a show [the night before San Diego Comic Con] and I’m really just living out my childhood dream right now. It’s surreal, and I couldn’t be happier.
How do you feel the show has melded topical social issues into the story?
I think our writer’s room handles these issues deftly and with a lot of care because of the younger audience of the show. But I don’t think that makes it any less important that we touch on those issues. This season will be no different and they’ll go even further with that.
What opportunities are given the “different versions” of Supergirl.
The doppelgänger we saw at the end of Season 3 is going to be a really cool experiment much like the way Red Son in the Superman comic explored it. It’ll show how two people with the same abilities can act so different — what kind of heroes they’d be, what their morals would be. I think that’s going to be something interesting to explore this year.
[As of press time] Have you done any of the doppelgänger scenes yet?
No I haven’t [as of press time] shot anything in Season 4 yet. I’ve read a few of the scenes, and it’s such a cool idea. The Red Son comic book is awesome, so I’m excited to see where they go with it.
Any plans for Kevin Smith to come back and direct?
Yeah, I think he’s slated to come back. I think all of us would be devastated if he didn’t. He’s our favorite. We love all of our directors but Kevin is so special, obviously.
You’re working with a fan.
(Laughs) And we’re all fans of his.
We’ve heard about the all the new cast members — any thoughts on the new crew?
I’m so excited about all of it. We’re lucky and excited to have such a group of wonderful people. There’s not a bad egg in the bunch. We all love each and get along. Each new cast member exemplified that. We’ve got Manchester Black (David Ajala), and Jesse Rath is joining us Brainiac and he’s so fun. Nia Nall (Nicole Maines)…I’m so excited for her and what she’ll mean for people. These records she’s breaking and the importance this role will have for young people.
