Army of Darkness Bubba Ho-Tep is written by Scott Duval, illustrated by Vincenzo Federici, colored by Michele Monte, lettered by Taylor Esposito, and edited by Kevin Ketner. Army of Darkness Bubba Ho-Tep is published by Dynamite Comics.
I’m going to assume readers have had the pleasure of seeing both films. So, there will be spoilers from both films mentioned.
So how does Duval mix these 2 epic tales together? Simple, Ash gets a hunch that The King is still alive in a nursing home. Ash is so curious that he can’t pass up investigating further. So, he makes his way to the nursing home to see what he can discover.
I can tell you that this comic happens after the events of both respective films. And, that Ash’s interest was peaked after hearing the words Elvis and mummy. There are fun Easter eggs from both films all throughout this first issue. And, who doesn’t want to see Ash and Elvis hopefully work together to take down some ancient evil?
Before I even read Army of Darkness Bubba Ho-Tep I was super curious as to how two characters that are both portrayed by Bruce Campbell would interact with one another. And, I must admit it’s pretty freaking awesome. Both characters have their own distinct voice and personalities. I mean I’m reading both in Bruce Campbell’s voice, but that’s never a bad thing.
The humor from both films mesh perfectly thanks to Duval’s creative writing. So many call-backs to baddies from both films. And, so much funny, gross, and macabre things are in play. It’s honestly seamless.
Bottom line, Army of Darkness Bubba Ho-Tep has to be my favorite mash-up so far in 2019.
