Earth Day takes on a very new meaning in 2020. While this day is normally earmarked as a day for promoting and supporting environmental protection (something that is still wildly important), the current pandemic has changed that. Earth Day has shifted towards, well at least in my head, more about the people of the earth coming together to combat this virus, as well as take care of those in need, and those heroes taking care of those in need.
Today, Asbury Park’s renowned pop/soul singer Remember Jones has released a cover of Edgar Winter’s ‘Save the Planet’ via Telegraph Hill Records. The cover was original meant to support environmental charities, but the focus has been shifted to helping those on the frontlines of battling COVID-19.
If you purchase the song via the Remember Jones website, all profits will go to benefit GetUsPPE.org
GetUsPPE.org is dedicated to empowering communities to get personal protective equipment (PPE) to the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic and according to their mission statement:
“We believe healthcare workers should not have to fear for their own life because they do not have access to the protective equipment they need. With swift and decisive action from the Federal Government and strong community support we can still get healthcare workers the equipment they need to fight the COVID-19 pandemic.”
Remember Jones issued the following statement about the shift in charitable donations:
“As we are all experiencing this global pandemic, there are heroes working on the frontlines who are risking their lives every day. Nurses, doctors and hospital workers are dealing with the physical and emotional effects of COVID-19 and working long, stressful hours. Through all of these uncertainties, reading about the critical shortage of personal protective equipment has shocked and saddened me. I have been inspired to do what I can in this time to help – through music and awareness.”
Jones’ cover of Edgar Winter’s ‘Save the Planet’ (off his White Trash record) includes a large ensemble of musicians supporting the singer including a 20-person choir, horn section, and full rhythm section with piano, Hammond B3 organ, guitar, bass, drums, and percussion. According to press release, all musicians and artists involved have donated and volunteered their time to this important cause and message.
