This issue opens up with ‘Where All Paths Lead.’ Buffy is trying like hell to close up a Hellmouth. Buffy is doing her thing, slaying demon after demon. Reminiscing on things that happened in the past and letting her mistakes weight far too heavy in her mind. Then she’s suddenly greeted by a demon named Agog. No slayer in the past has made it this far into the hellmouth.
The next tale in this issue takes the reader back in time to 1910 and takes place in the Philippines. We learn about a big bad called the aswang. The aswang prey on pregnant women. And, sadly a pregnant woman has been attacked. The slayer decides to do everything in her power to defeat this creature.
The last tale of this issue takes the reader to Dublin in 1947. Una, the slayer, is working in a simple shop. A friend of hers named Kerry has gotten into some trouble for holding hands with a boy. The result of doing this seems to land her in an asylum. Una can’t let Kerry waste away in an asylum. And, yes this is actually a reason why women in the past were institutionalized.
So, I like that this issue continues with the main story arch, and adds these two new tales. Learning about these slayers from the past made me feel closer to Buffy. I feel like Buffy is a representation of all the strong women that came before her, and they’re what shaped her into the bad ass she currently is. I really enjoyed learning about the past slayers.
