Love is in the air on Only Murders in the Building Season 3 Episode 5. Love, and murder, of course. As this season has progressed, the trio’s respective love interests have had suspicion thrown onto them, and it seems these clues are finally coming to fruition.
The episode – appropriately titled “Ah, Love!” – begins with Oliver and Mabel questioning Charles about the writing on Ben’s dressing room mirror. Spelled out, in Joy’s (Andrea Martin, My Big Fat Greek Wedding) lipstick, were the words “Fucking Pig.” Naturally, it would be easy to question Joy as a suspect. But since Charles randomly proposed to her without intending to, he’s in a tough spot to bring this up.
When he does, Joy gets upset and begins wedding preparations on her own, annoyed that Charles would believe it was her. Truthfully, it does feel like a red herring at this point, but as we know, this show is full of twists that may bring up details from earlier in this season in the very last episode.
Still, while Joy is out, Sazz (Jane Lynch, Glee) returns and knocks some sense into Charles. The pair play a game and Charles realizes that he’s getting in his own way and not letting himself be happy. He’s pushing himself to believe Joy is a murder suspect because he isn’t used to feeling this way and feels it’s too good to be true that Joy would want him.
When he reveals this to Joy later in the episode, he also spills how the proposal was an accident. All of these confessions upset Joy and cause her to walk out, because he only cares about his own ego. While the viewer definitely feels a bit bad for Charles – since it’s clear he had a true revelation about his feelings – this will play a part in his character growth and it likely won’t be the last we see of Joy.
As for Mabel, she’s investigating a new lead. She’s meeting with Tobert (Jesse Williams, Grey’s Anatomy), who was following Jonathan (Jason Veasey, Chicago Fire), since he was Ben’s understudy and had a lot to gain from Ben’s death…but the lead fell flat. So, Tobert really just creates a fake plan to get a date with Mabel. However, Mabel and Tobert end up seeing Jonathan at the restaurant with a suspicious man who goes by Dr. C and had control over some of Ben’s medicine.
This lead will undoubtedly uncover new information, even if it’s not the road to Ben’s killer. Mabel and Tobert also unearth more than an exciting potential suspect; the two grow the spark that was obviously between them and Mabel even shows him the murder wall. How romantic!
Still, Tobert himself could be a suspect to look at. He hasn’t been seen as a contender just yet, but he was snooping around Ben’s apartment for clues, and he could have a motive, as the documentarian behind Ben’s movie. What would rack up more views than this murder documentary on a huge star?
We would need more information to solidify that lead, though. For now, we have another suspect to look at, beyond Jonathan and Dr. C. Loretta, played by Meryl Streep, has been a suspicious character for a while. Even at first, it seemed like she could have committed the crime.
Her and Oliver bond over a dinner date in this episode, where she calls Ben a “fucking pig,” the exact words on the mirror. This raises some red flags, but Oliver continues along on the date, even taking a ferry ride with Loretta and learning about her past adventures. Loretta reveals that Ben always treated her horribly and said she was obsessed with him. She fought with Ben the night he died, and she called him the words that were on the mirror. Does that mean she wrote them? Or that it was someone else who overheard?
Despite any odd discoveries, Oliver and Loretta solidify their strong connection, laughing the night away, before ending up at Loretta’s place. But if the words on the mirror weren’t enough, Oliver finds an old scrapbook in Loretta’s bookshelf, full of article snippets and pictures of Ben, seemingly tracking his whereabouts or accomplishments, all the way up to the announcement that he was joining Oliver’s play.
Yikes. This is not looking good. Loretta clearly had more involvement with Ben than she had let on, and it may have led to her joining this play. But just how involved was she with the death? And who else may be hiding a dark secret? Each season, the trio’s significant others are investigated, potential killers hiding in plain sight. It seems like this time around is no different, and we may have another murderous lover on our hands.
