Now, as official partners of the ZPD, Nick (Jason Bateman) and Judy (Ginnifer Goodwin) are out to prove themselves as more than just one-hit wonders. But is Judy’s lust for solving a case too much for Nick’s nonchalant attitude? Together, they open a new part of themselves to each other and reveal the true histories of Zootopia, aiding the shunned reptile species.
The film’s most commendable aspect is that it effectively adds to the world without making anything feel rushed or out of place. Firstly, Zootopia 2 adds a key piece of fundamental Zootopia history: its origins. Discovering the truth behind the weather walls and the realization of species segregation creates a deeper, more complex story. This key plot point introduces a whole new geographical sector that blends beautifully with the Zootopia we know and love.
Secondly, and most impressive, is the addition of so many new characters. We are introduced to so many new species and characters throughout the film and not one of them feels like a “forced cameo” or a random addition in order to add new animals. Gary De’Snake (Ke Huy Quan) is the perfect misunderstood character that everyone falls in love with because of their kindness and genuine desire to help. Nibbles Maplestick (Fortune Feimster) is the comedic relief character this film needs; she is bold and fierce. These new main characters are the perfect counterparts to Judy and Nick, filling in the gaps of what they needed but refused to see. The Marsh Market adds a new level of genuineness, with animals you’d never expect to see, like dolphins, walruses, seals, and sea lions (never to be mistaken for one another). It keeps things interesting and new and stays true to the original’s integrity.
Most importantly, the villains of this story are truly scary! The Lynxley family (Brenda Song, Macaulay Culkin, David Strathairn) are murderous, unremorseful cats. They are dark and truly out for blood, which is different from the typical Disney villain. And Pawbert (Andy Samberg), the youngest Lynxley, is truly goose-bump-inducing.
Additionally, there are so many celebrity cameos that made this Disney nerd giggle. My personal favorite is a koala named Robert Furwin, played by the iconic and recent Dancing with the Stars champion, Robert Irwin. Shakira also returns as pop sensation Giselle, with a hopping new single “Zoo” adding to the already terrific soundtrack.
As great as the film is, Nick Wilde’s character development feels short-changed. While it is understandable that a sly fox remains a certain level of sly, his lack of interest in his work kind of puts him on a little plateau after some great growth in Zootopia.
Zootopia 2 is a great continuation, bringing to life new aspects and characters that grow the universe beautifully.
