Aaron and Josh Sarnecky are back in the new year to talk about another film. This time it’s Police Story for its 40th anniversary.
Police Story is an action-comedy film directed by Jackie Chan, who co-wrote the film with Edward Tang. It opened in theaters in Hong Kong on December 14, 1985. It debuted on video in the U.S. in 1988.
In the film, Hong Kong police officer Ka-Kui Chan (Jackie Chan) must protect Salina Fong (Brigitte Lin), key witness against drug lord Tao Chu (Chor Yuen), who will stop at nothing to silence her and get revenge on Ka-Kui.
Other characters include Ka-Kui’s girlfriend May (Maggie Cheung) and his superiors Inspector Bill (Bill Tung) and Superintendent Raymond Li (Kwok-Hung Lam).
In 2016, a group of critics, directors, actors, and stunt performers voted Police Story the fifth greatest action movie of all time in Time Out magazine. As of 2026, there are seven installments in the Police Story franchise.
Aaron discusses his relationship with the film with first-time watcher Josh before they go into the film’s plot, characters, comedy, and action. They also talk about its place in Jackie Chan’s filmography and his future on the big screen.
