Cate Tomlinson Enters Her Most Authentic Era with “The Line”

There’s a certain kind of honesty that can’t be forced, the kind that lingers until it’s ready to be said out loud. For rising pop artist Cate Tomlinson, that moment came unexpectedly while standing in the kitchen of her childhood home, when the melody for what would become “The Line” first came to her.

Now based in Los Angeles, Tomlinson is stepping into what she describes as her “most authentic” era, one defined by personal growth, emotional clarity, and a willingness to let her music evolve naturally. While her earlier work leaned into bright, polished pop, “The Line” reveals a more stripped-down, guitar-driven side of her artistry, rooted in storytelling and vulnerability.

Tomlinson explained that this new phase of her career isn’t tied to a specific place so much as it is to experience. Being surrounded by other artists in Los Angeles has sharpened her craft, but it’s the relationships and life moments she’s encountered along the way that have deepened her songwriting. That growth is especially evident in “The Line,” a song she considers the most truthful and complete depiction of a personal experience she’s written to date.

Rather than jumping into writing it right away, she waited until she felt ready to take on the weight of the story. When the right melody finally appeared, everything fell into place. The song came together quickly, almost all at once, as if the emotional buildup had been waiting for the right outlet. The result is a track that captures the feeling of loving someone at the wrong time, sitting between certainty and hesitation.

Sonically, “The Line” stands apart from much of Tomlinson’s previous work. Built around guitar and live instrumentation, the track leans into a more singer-songwriter sound, something she didn’t plan but felt was necessary to honor the story she was telling. For Tomlinson, the music always follows the emotion, not the other way around. She made it clear that she has no intention of confining herself to a single genre, instead allowing each song to take the shape it needs.

That approach is rooted in the artists who shaped her early on, particularly Taylor Swift, whose storytelling has influenced her since childhood. Albums like Red served as a blueprint for how to translate personal experiences into songs that resonate with others. Even now, that influence remains present, not in imitation, but in the emphasis on honesty and narrative.

Despite her move to Los Angeles, Tomlinson still finds herself creatively tied to her Bay Area roots. Being back home, especially in familiar spaces like the piano she grew up playing, often reconnects her with the foundation of her songwriting. In many ways, “The Line” feels like a full-circle moment, a return to the kind of raw, personal music she started writing years ago, now refined by experience.

Outside of her music, Tomlinson has built a strong and growing connection with her audience through platforms like TikTok, where she shares everything from casual life updates to cooking videos. She approaches social media with the same authenticity that defines her songwriting, treating it less like a performance and more like a conversation. As her following has grown, so has her comfort in being fully herself, something she says now comes naturally.

That growing fanbase has been reflected in real-world momentum as well. With her EP The Side Effects of You surpassing 2 million streams and a sold-out show at Los Angeles’ Peppermint Club, Tomlinson is beginning to see tangible signs of her progress. That performance, in particular, marked a turning point, giving her a sense of confidence that her career is moving in the right direction.

And while her music taps into deeply emotional territory, her personality remains refreshingly grounded and self-aware. When it comes to pre-show rituals, she keeps it simple: a beta blocker and a shot of whiskey, and she’s ready to go.

Looking ahead, Tomlinson continues to explore different sides of her artistry, balancing high-energy pop tracks with more introspective, story-driven songs. Still, “The Line” stands apart as a defining moment in her music and a clear statement of who she is as an artist right now.

It’s the kind of song that doesn’t just mark a new chapter but rather sets the tone for everything that comes next.
