It all comes down to this, and I am struggling not to spoil anything. This issue is just SO DAMN AWESOME. If you were a fan of the original cartoon, Space Ghost Coast-to-Coast, and read DC Comics’ Space Ghost mini-series, then all the nods and easter eggs will be fairly clear. That is all I can and will say. Because Space Ghost #12 is THE issue to read.Â
Fine, one reveal. Thundercleese.Â
The story of Space Ghost hits a fever pitch as a final battle commences in earnest. While Issue #11 produced a build towards the inevitable clash, Space Ghost #12Â is a knock-down and drag-out brawl from start to finish. All the big players are set up for their final acts to be played. The Eclipse Woman is recruited alongside others from the multiverse, all of whom have some sort of connection to Space Ghost in one previous medium or another.Â
Space Ghost, trapped by Tempus, the Time Master in a machine called the Time Shredder. Say this five-times fast. Jace and Jan dive through the timestream and multiverse to recruit others to help, creating their own Space Force. We read dueling stories between the Space Spectre and Tempus, each with their own motives to either save or doom the galaxy as we know it.Â
The fierce fighting is more than just brawling and shouting at each other. Each dueling pair have a grudge to get off their collective chests while also trying to assert their dominance. In one panel, the Space Spectre questions Tarko why he remains loyal to Tempest. In the previous issues, Tarko the Terrible seemed to possess an honorable side, a warrior with respect. Perhaps this will be explored in the future.Â
Inevitably Space Ghost and Tempus go one-on-one with the entire multiversal timeline hanging in the balance. This is where Pepose, Lau, Dalhouse, Exposito, and Rybandt shine bright. As the two battle it out in a twisting colorful tornado, there are dire explanations through monologue which reveals the most shocking twist I have ever read. The true identity of Tempus is revealed, which suddenly hits harder like a hundred asteroids colliding at once. Yes, it is a tragically sad one, and puts a perfect wrap on the Time Master’s story arc.Â
As the smoke clears, there are casualties, and it seems things may never be the same for all involved, both friend and foe alike.Â
If you haven’t been reading, then shame on you. Pick up the individual issues, or wait for the incoming trade. This is must-read material if you are a fan of Space Ghost.Â
