Forget hyper-digital screens and overstimulating arcade noises. This tried-and-true, beloved, family-owned theme park invites guests of all generations to unplug and walk straight into their favorite classic nursery rhymes and fairy tales.
How does a vintage theme park stay so delightfully relevant in our high-tech era? The Pop Break spoke with Storybook Land owner Jessica Panetta to uncover the secrets behind the park’s decades of success. From taking a spin in a pumpkin coach on the new Cinderoller Coaster to basking in the winter glow of the famous Christmas Fantasy with Lights, Jessica shares how her family keeps the magic alive.
Storybook Land has been operating since 1955. What do you think is the secret that has allowed the park to retain its charm and stay relevant across multiple generations, while so many classic roadside attractions across America have disappeared?
I believe the timelessness of Storybook Land is a key factor in our success. Instead of chasing the latest trends or IPs, we maintain a consistent experience year after year by featuring familiar fairy tales and nursery rhymes that everyone knows. Our park offers a welcome alternative to larger, more intense amusement parks. While those parks are fun, they are not always easy to navigate with small children. We strive to provide a safe, clean environment with a caring and attentive staff where parents can feel completely comfortable.
As a mom of three small children, I am all too familiar with the “logistics” of family outings; even a simple trip to the grocery store or a doctor’s appointment requires extensive planning. We aim to ease that mental load for parents by keeping our park easy to navigate and stress-free.
One of the most special aspects of Storybook Land is watching parents and grandparents bring their kids to experience the exact same scenes and rides they loved as children. How does leadership balance keeping those iconic, classic displays intact with updating the park for today’s families?
Upkeep and the park’s overall appearance are very important to us. We take pride in our work and our park, which is why we are constantly updating, repainting, refurbishing, and improving our facilities. Our talented staff is always working hard on new projects to enhance the experience.
While the summer season is huge along the Shore corridor, Storybook Land is also famous for its off-peak transformations, especially the Fall events and the Christmas display. How crucial have these seasonal events become to the park’s identity and year-round connection to the local community?
For more than 40 years, we have been celebrating our Christmas Fantasy with Lights, and it has truly become a South Jersey tradition. We often hear guests say, “It’s not Christmas in Atlantic County until Storybook Land turns on the lights.” During Christmas Fantasy, the entire park is transformed into a winter wonderland, covered in millions of twinkling lights. Each night, Santa Claus makes his appearance in his magical chimney. With a wave of his wand, more than one million lights come to life, creating a moment that really does feel like watching magic happen right before your eyes.
We also hear time and time again, “The REAL Santa Claus is at Storybook Land.” There is something special about strolling through a glowing winter wonderland with a cup of hot chocolate in hand, surrounded by the sights, sounds, and excitement of the Christmas season.
And unlike many holiday light displays, Storybook Land is fully operational during Christmas Fantasy—all of our rides and snack bars are open, making it an experience the whole family can enjoy.
Our Fall into Fun Festival and Trick-or-Treat Weekends have become incredibly popular with families. The park is transformed with colorful mums, hay bales, cornstalks, pumpkins, and festive fall decorations. Guests can explore our huge interactive hay maze, decorate pumpkins, and enjoy hayrides throughout the park.
One of the things parents of toddlers and young children especially love about Fall into Fun is that it is 100% non-scary. Families can enjoy all the excitement of Halloween without worrying about their little ones being frightened. Trick-or-Treat Weekends are some of my favorite weekends to work. The entire park seems to get into the spirit of the season. Kids arrive in their favorite costumes, parents get dressed up, our staff joins in the fun, and before long, everyone is part of the celebration. It’s a wonderful reminder that some of the best family memories are made when everyone gets to be a kid for the day.
When park leadership decides it’s time to add or replace a ride, what goes into that design process to ensure a new addition still feels distinctly like Storybook Land?
Keeping with the theme of the park is incredibly important to us. We’re all about the details, and the little Easter eggs guests discover when they look closely, when designing or decorating a new attraction. Honestly, it’s one of my favorite parts of the job. Whenever we decide to add a new ride, I find myself asking, “How can we take this very common amusement ride and make it fun and exciting for kids?” “How can we make it unique?” “What do we already have that we can repurpose?” And perhaps most importantly, “How can we make this an easy, enjoyable experience for our guests?”
Take our new Cinderoller Coaster, for example. It’s a spinning coaster, and plenty of other parks have the same model. But at Storybook Land, we wanted to make it something more. Our coaster takes riders through a castle façade and a pumpkin patch — and, did I mention you’re seated in a coaster car shaped and painted like a pumpkin coach? It’s “extra,” but that’s what we love to do. We take something that could be a very common amusement park ride and turn it into a uniquely Storybook Land experience.
Kids today grow up in a hyper-digital, screen-heavy world. When they step through your gates, they encounter tangible storybook scenes and classic rides. What have you observed about how today’s children interact with the park, and do you feel there’s a renewed appreciation among parents for wholesome, offline play?
As a parent, absolutely! The park is the perfect place for kids and adults to unplug and have fun. You don’t need to use your phone to navigate the park. We still hand out maps, something that has gone by the wayside in the industry. Kids love holding onto that park map! The hands-on aspect of the park has been there since Day One. It’s a place for kids to just be kids. No need for a screen, no arcade games, nothing loud or overstimulating.
From the upkeep of the classic nursery rhyme displays to the immaculate grounds, Storybook Land feels very hands-on and meticulously cared for. What does the day-to-day work look like behind the scenes to maintain that vintage aesthetic and warm, safe family environment?
My family has owned and operated Storybook Land since 1955, and to this day, there is almost always a member of the family at the park, overseeing the day-to-day operation and making sure everything meets the standards we’ve upheld for generations.
We’re also fortunate to have employees who have been with us for many years. They understand the traditions, expectations, and attention to detail that have been part of Storybook Land for decades.
Everyone on our team has their own niche and specialty. I think that combination of family involvement and experienced employees is a big part of what makes Storybook Land so special. There’s a tremendous amount of history and pride behind everything we do.
As you reflect on the park’s history and look ahead to the next chapter, what is the ultimate goal or message you hope every child and every adult takes home with them when they walk out of Storybook Land?
I hope every visitor leaves Storybook Land with fond memories that they’ll carry with them for a long time. As a child, my family traveled to many different parks, and to this day, I still return to some of those places with my own family. The memories come flooding back year after year, and I hope my children will hold on to those same kinds of moments and memories.
That is what I hope our visitors experience when they come to Storybook Land. We often see multiple generations visiting the park together, and guests regularly share stories with us about their visits from years ago. We never tire of hearing those stories. There’s something incredibly special about knowing that a place has been part of a family’s memories for generations.
Most of all, I hope our guests were able to slow down, enjoy time together, and simply have fun, without overthinking or over-planning. Those simple, unhurried moments with family are often the ones that stay with us the longest.
