The cast of Brooklyn Nine-Nine reunited on Day 1 of New York Comic-Con with writer and co-creator Dan Goor in the North Room from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Cast members Stephanie Beatriz, Melissa Fumero, and Joe Lo Truglio looked back at fond memories from the show, discussing the creation of certain characters and plot lines.
While discussing the audition process, Beatriz revealed that she originally auditioned for Amy Santiago (Fumero). After agreeing with casting director Allison Jones, Beatriz tried out for Megan, a now-scrapped character. Beatriz described Megan as a redheaded Irish cop who had brothers in the force. Eventually, the writers distributed aspects of Megan to other characters, like Gina Linetti (Chelsea Peretti) and Rosa Diaz (Beatriz).
The writers made a few changes to characters over time, including Charles Boyle (Lo Truglio). Eventually, the writers aged him out of his crush on Rosa, which Lo Truglio acknowledged as endearing but eventually immature.
Goor said the switch to NBC felt natural, claiming Brooklyn Nine-Nine always felt like an NBC show despite being on Fox.
Goor and Fumero both discussed the progression of “Peraltiago,” the show’s most popular relationship. The romance between Jake Peralta (Andy Samberg) and Amy Santiago has become iconic since Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s was on the air.
Goor commented on the chemistry between Fumero and Samberg and their goals for developing the couple even after they got together. The writers did not want to give them random hiccups in their plotlines, like most sitcoms do when a couple gets together. Instead, they put them in situations like any other pairing and let the chemistry speak for itself.
The cast also spoke about the legacy of the late Andre Braugher, who played Captain Raymond Holt. While researching the show, Goor heard Braugher ask the cops they shadowed for their routine: “one minute before [they] wake up to one minute after [they] fall asleep.” Fumero noted that Braugher’s technique inspired her further as an actor.
Goor joked about a possible reboot, and an audience member’s question even inspired a cold open. Whether or not this precinct returns to our TVs, this reunion brought back beloved memories of the show and will make any fan launch straight into a rewatch.
