31 Days of Horror: Silent Hill

The Silent Hill video game scares the crap out of me. Sure, this seems ridiculous for someone who watches several horror films a day but it’s the getting involved part that freaks me out. I actually get so into the games that I start to believe my character is real and that I’m going to die. Yes, I am that person that jumps every time one of those blind nurses twitches and laughs nervously when I hear the Pyramid Head dragging his sword. I have never once finished an entire Silent Hill game.

Now that they have released Silent Hill: Downpour and are releasing Silent Hill: Revelations 3D on October 26, I am in the mood to watch the original film to prepare. Tonight, I go to Silent Hill.

Little Sharon (Jodelle Ferland) has been having horrible nightmares about a place called Silent Hill. In order to figure out why these dreams are happening, Sharon’s adoptive mother, Rose (Radha Mitchell) takes Sharon there. On the way, they end up in a car crash and when Rose wakes up, Sharon is gone. Rose must now make her way through the deserted and ash covered town of Silent Hill, which seems to change and is filled with evil creatures and a murderous religious cult. Meanwhile, her husband is in the unchanged Silent Hill searching for them both. They are in the same place at the same time but possibly in different dimensions.

In the video game, it’s a father, Harry Mason searching for his daughter Cheryl. However, the mother/daughter dynamic probably hits people closer to home. Everything in the games that scares the shit out of me is in the movie. Those damn nurses brought to life are nightmare inducing and don’t even get me started on the Pyramid Head. The guy rips the skin completely off a girl with one pull. I hate him yet I love him.

My favorite person in the film is Laurie Holden (Andrea on The Walking Dead) as the police officer Cybil. She tends to be a scene stealer as quite the badass. Then again, if you have watched The Mist, then you know she is no stranger to that.

Jodelle Ferland is one creepy ass kid. She plays two parts in the film as Sharon and Alessa, one good and one evil. She does a fantastic job of each. I’ll tell you though; she makes me terrified of the idea of adoption. In fact, she makes me a little terrified of kids in general.

If you’re a fan of the games, don’t expect to find everything the same or you’ll be disappointed. Watch the film as a film and you will enjoy every minute.
