Trailer Tuesday: Strong Women, Strong Movies

Sue takes part in Trailer Tuesday this week, reviewing three trailers feature strong female leads … kicking ass, taking names and getting their Victorian romance on.

Sucker Punch
Release Date: March 25
Starring: Emily Browning, Abbie Cornish, Jenna Malone, Vanessa Hudgens, Scott Glenn, Carla Gugino
Director: Zach Snyder (300)
Theater, Rent, No Thanks, Undecided? Theater.
Who misses Buffy, Sydney Bristow, Beatrix Kiddo? Chicks who can put the fear of god into a man with a swift roundhouse kick or flick of a Hatori Hanso are few and far between these days. Chloe Moretz as Hit-Girl in Kick Ass gave us a taste of how much cooler it is when its a girl delivering the beating, but how cool would a movie full of Hit-Girls be? Add to that the fact that the film is helmed by Zach Snyder, the auteur behind such popcorn superflicks as 300 and Watchmen, and you’ve got a stylistically supercharged, bloody as hell fantasy flick. Action like this can only be appreciated on the big screen.

Hanna
Release Date: April 8
Starring: Saoirse Ronan, Cate Blanchett, Eric Bana
Director: Joe Wright (Atonement)
Theater, Rent, No Thanks, Undecided?Rent.
What do you get when you combine Cate Blanchett and Eric Bana? The perfect assassin … in the body of a 16-year-old girl. Not since Drew Barrymoore in Firestarter has a young girl proven this much trouble for government agents. Saoirse Ronan as the titular character, Hanna, proves highly capable in both intelligence and ass-kicking as she evades said agents on an as-yet-to-be-determined mission. But questions remain? Is Hanna all she seems to be, or are there secrets yet to be uncovered? Definitely a popcorn flick for the good ole ektorp.

Jane Eyre
Release Date: March 11
Starring: Mia Wasikowska, Michael Fassbender, Jamie Bell, Judi Dench, Sally Hawkins
Director: Cary Fukunaga (Sin Nombre)
Theater, Rent, No Thanks, Undecided? Rent

Consider it Bronte with some balls. Jane Eyre gets retooled for the 21st Century and becomes a somewhat darker, more sinister tale. Perhaps reflective of our times, or perhaps simply a retelling of a classic from a new and interesting perspective, 2011’s Jane Eyre casts Mia Wasikowska (Alice In Wonderland, The Kids Are All Right) as Jane, one of literature’s most famous characters. Can Wasikowska carry such an unique interpretation to such a classic? She’s certainly plain enough, but her acting smacks a little of a slightly better Claire Danes. The ultimate outcome remains to be seen, but I’ll be seeing it from the comfort of my own home.
