The Singles Party: Spoon, ‘Rent I Pay’

SPOON!

Britt Daniel and the gang have returned with a brand new track, ‘Rent I Pay.’ We were stoked to see them at The Governors Ball Music Festival and now with the release of the single and soon-to-be-released record in August, we felt like we just had to talk about them in this week’s column.

Al Mannarino: I’ve been a big fan of Spoon ever since I first heard “I Summon You” on the sixth season of Scrubs. I finally saw them live for the first time a few weeks ago at The Governors Ball and they were incredible. They recently announced that they will be releasing a new album and I actually walked past a few posters in Brooklyn that read “Spoon R.I.P. June 14.” I thought initially that was when the album was going to be released, it turns out that it was promotion for their first single off the album, “Rent I Pay.”

Hearing Spoon perform their hits like “Don’t You Evah,” and “The Underdog” was great, but I was more excited to hear new music from them. “Rent I Pay” is classic Spoon. The bands unique sound is layered perfectly throughout the entire track. Britt Daniel’s vocals shine over a loud and catching drum beat. “Rent I Pay” is a perfect way to start a summer playlist, and I am excited to hear more from them. Verdict: Add to Playlist

Jason Stives: t’s been said numerous time but it bares repeating; no one knows how to make a groove strut in indie rock like Spoon. The Austin based band have reveled in their ability to bring the sway to Kinks inspired garage rock accented as always by Britt Daniel’s too cool for school vocals. “Rent I Pay” continues that formula with gusto again bringing so much to so little. “Everybody knows, just where you’ve been going/And if that’s your answer, no I ain’t your dancer,” Daniels sings with a snarl over a boom clap drum and you no damn well he means what he says. This band has always been consistent and with a new album dropping in August this is a damn good sign. Verdict: Add to the Playlist

Kelly O’Dowd: Spoon is a band that I forget I like ever time I hear a song of theirs. It’s like “Hey, Kelly! Here is a band you’ll like! It’s all indie rock like!” And so I listen. And I’m excited. Until the song is over. Then I forget about them again. Now, I’m not saying they are a bad band, here. I’m saying that they never do anything memorable. The same goes with this song. The lead singer has distinctive vocals, but…that’s about it. I can appreciate the song being a favorite. Hell, I enjoy the song! It has a beat that you can rock out to. It’s upbeat enough not to feel sad while listening to it. But when it’s all said and done, I’ll forget I like Spoon once the song is over. I blame myself for this inadequacy, and not the band and the music. Verdict: One and Done

Nick Porcaro: I’m not very familiar with Spoon but I can get behind their latest single. “Rent I Pay” carries itself with a Stones-esque swagger that’s smarter than it seems. This song’s a real grower—insistent enough to stick in your head, but laid back enough not to offend or annoy. About the only complaint I can raise is the abrupt ending, but considering that “Rent I Pay” will be the first song on the new album, I’ll bet this track transitions nicely into the next one. I’m looking forward to listening to They Want My Soul, out August 5th. Time to get myself acquainted with some more Spoon. Verdict: Add to playlist.

Bill Bodkin: “Rent I Pay” is a killer track. It’s got all the trappings of classic Spoon – beautifully rock ‘n’ roll vocals, an infectious hook and an awesome beat. But then it just ends. Completely and unexpectedly, with no fanfare, crescendo or climax. It’s such a good song, but for me that ending just kills it. It’s deflating, disappointing and disheartening. I don’t think it’s enough for me to not recommend it to you, but I can’t give this a resounding thumbs up either. Verdict: Abstain

Final Verdict: We can safely tell you to add this to your playlist.
