Notable Openings This Weekend: Dumb and Dumber To, Beyond the Lights
I’m still licking my wounds for Christopher Nolan. Interstellar did not open #1, all the Nolan haters are dancing in the streets, and it feels like the film was getting stat corrected every day this week on what it actually made, kicking it while it’s down. Word of mouth is poor. It will drop big this weekend. It is what it is. We’re moving on, and what we’re moving onto is a sequel twenty years in the making. Yes, the Farrelly Brothers are hoping pure nostalgia will catapult them to #1 this weekend. The buzz feels pretty lackluster right now for Dumb and Dumber To, but it should still be a good fight between the idiots and Big Hero 6. In the words of Lloyd Christmas, “Do you want to hear the most annoying sound in the world?” BOOOOOOX OFFFFFIIIIIIIIICCCEEE PREEEDIIIIIICCCTIIIOOONS!
When this film was first announced, I was really excited. Like a lot of people my age, the original Dumb and Dumber from 1994 is one of my favorite comedies of all time. Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels made magic together. When I saw that first trailer though I remembered who the directors were – the Farrelly Brothers. I don’t need to do the whole “they haven’t made a good movie since There’s Something About Mary” thing – it’s been said a billion times. These trailers have not impressed though, and I’m basically bracing for a disaster. At this point I’m just hoping it doesn’t make me think less of the original. I would love nothing more than to walk out of this movie in stitches, but odds aren’t looking good. As far as the box office goes, I still think there’s enough people interested to make this a fight, but it won’t be anything special, and probably won’t even make close to what the original did.
There’s also another movie opening in wide release, Beyond the Lights. I know absolutely nothing about this film, and nobody else seems to care about it. It will crack the top five purely based on the fact that other films have been out for a while, but whatever.
HOW WILL IT ALL BREAK DOWN…
It will be close, but the power of Marvel and Disney are triumphant yet again. Nostalgia won’t be enough to take down Big Hero 6, which everybody seems to be loving. Dumb and Dumber To will do respectable business though.
