5. Matchstick Men (2003)
I don’t know why everyone forgets this movie when talking about Ridley Scott. I’m guessing it’s because Matchstick Men is one of the more un-Ridley Scott movies there is. Regardless, this is a great comedic con-game caper. This film is another reminder of how great Nicolas Cage can be when given the right material. He’s a brilliant actor when he wants to be. All the ticks, all the “uhhhh’s,” and all the quirks. This is an extremely well fleshed out character, and Cage is entertaining as all hell. Hans Zimmer is usually Ridley Scott’s composer of choice, and just as this film is not prototypical Ridley, neither is this for Zimmer. It flows with the movie beautifully. Alison Lohman is superb as Cage’s long lost daughter, and the two have a great chemistry. You also get Sam Rockwell. Come on? When is Sam Rockwell not awesome? If you missed this one, please check it out. It’s a funny, zany, and at times heart-warming story, with a real knockout performance from Cage.
