10. Black Rain (1989)
This one is pretty hokey, but it has its charm. I’m not really invested in the story though. It’s all about the characters, especially Michael Douglas in a really off beat role. This came after Wall Street, so it’s funny to see Gordon Gekko play a pain in the ass renegade cop. Douglas plays Nick Conklin, a detective under investigation who goes abroad to Japan to hunt down a Yakuza big wig. He takes his loony partner with him, played wonderfully by Andy Garcia. Garcia gives this character a lot of personality. Black Rain is slow at times, and there’s a poorly developed romantic interest played by Kate Capshaw, but the relationship between Conklin and Charlie (Garcia), and later Conklin and Masahiro (Ken Takakura) is very impactful. And like with most of Scott’s films, it’s very well shot, a theme we’ll be talking about ad nauseam I’m sure.
