8. Someone to Watch Over Me (1987)
This is one I can see a lot of people screaming “Are you kidding me!” at the top of their lungs. When the movie begins, it’s a complete train wreck. Tom Berenger is over acting to the point of lunacy. As the film goes on though, it totally sucks you in. I love the rhythm of the film, and it looks gritty, but also gorgeous at the same time, which fits perfectly when describing both main characters. Det. Mike Keegan (Berenger) has to protect a wealthy socialite (Mimi Rogers) who witnesses a brutal murder in this Bodyguard-esque type story. While Berenger’s performance is questionable at first, you slowly become enamored with this guy. Keegan’s two big relationships in the film, those being with his wife (played charismatically by Lorraine Bracco), and Claire (Rogers) who he becomes infatuated with, fires on all cylinders. And that’s ultimately why this film works, despite a real comic-bookey type bad guy, but also played with a lot of gusto by Andreas Katsulas. Someone to Watch Over Me is flawed, but its heart is in the right place, and it’s definitely entertaining.
