1. R2-D2 (The Star Wars Saga)

Come on? Who else was it going to be? R2-D2 is the robot all other robots strive to be. Even though only one other can understand him, R2 is the most loyal friend you could ever have. How many times has this trusty droid saved the collective asses of the Rebel Alliance? When asked if Luke wants another droid in the Battle of Yavin, he correctly states “Not on your life.” Not only is he an integral part to Luke’s X-Wing, but he puts up the smoke screen on Cloud City to help the Falcon escape, and how many damn doors did he open with that array of tools! R2 is the Swiss army knife of robots. What cements R2’s legacy further is that he was one of the few great aspects to the prequel trilogy. As disappointing as The Phantom Menace was, R2’s first scene where he fixes the Naboo ship could not have been a better re-introduction to the character – a genuine crowd pleasing moment. R2 has plenty of those though. Here’s five “bleep bloop” salutes to the greatest cinematic robot of all time.
