Trailer Tuesday: Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides

logan j. fowler and bill bodkin review the trailer for the fourth Pirates film …

Theater, Rent, No Thanks, Undecided? Rent.
While I enjoyed the original POTC a lot, mildly liked the second and could do well without the third, the fourth movie interests me slightly. The run time is shorter, there are new characters, and its Johnny Depp as good ol’ Captain Jack, which is Depp’s most beloved character. On the negative side, well really, did we need a new Pirates flick? I didn’t think so. Whatever the case, this one aims to be different, showcasing a more human side of Captain Sparrow involving an old flame (Penelope Cruz) and her father (Blackbeard, played by Ian McShane), who are seeking out the fountain of youth. I do want to see where this franchise goes (and if they improved upon it), but I’m okay with waiting to see it until it becomes available to rent. At least then I can enjoy the movie along with some rum.

Theater, Rent, No Thanks, Undecided? Theater.
In a recent Entertainment Weekly cover story, Johnny Depp openly admitted that the second and thirrd Pirates movies were way too convoluted and plot-driven and that On Stranger Tides will be returning to what got the films to the dance — interesting and entertaining characters throw into outrageous situations. After reading the article, I decided that I am all-in on the fourth film. Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow is one of the most entertaining characters to hit the silver screen in the last decade. He oozes so much charisma and character that his scenes in the lesser Pirates films absolved many of the films sins. So, now that the focus of the film is on him, not the love story between Will (Orlando Bloom) and Elizabeth (Keira Knightley), I think we’ll be seeing an epic film teeming with comedy and action with a lot less unnecessary plot twists. In my gut, I feel that this will probably be the least successful film in the series due to mistakes of the earlier films, but in the end this should be pure entertainment, perfect for summer.
